LowWire is an unofficial build of the HighWire web browser that adds first class support for Atari ST screen resolutions and the standard ROM VDI, meaning it now runs in every ST, TT and Falcon resolution with no SpeedoGDOS, NVDI, fVDI or any other dependency required.

The changes have been submitted upstream as freemint/highwire#7; if they're merged, prefer official builds.

TL;DR Unzip to your hard drive, run highwire.prg, that's it!

What you get without GDOS

  • Runs in all resolutions: ST low/medium/high, plus all TT and Falcon modes
  • Readable text: proper line spacing, correctly measured bold/italic, UI correctly sized to current resolution
  • Images look right: dithered into four grey levels on ST medium, aspect-corrected in modes with non-square-pixels (ST medium, TT low), and your palette restored when you quit
  • Works out of the box: CACHE folder is now created automatically (you can't view images online without it) and menus fit nicely on 320-pixel screens
  • Plus: assorted crash and rendering fixes, and an HTML/CSS test suite under html\test\

With NVDI or SpeedoGDOS installed, behaviour is unchanged — this build just means it works without them.

Installing

If you're using it offline or with STinG networking, it's ready to go:

  1. Unpack the zip file below to your hard drive.
  2. Run highwire.prg

If you'd like to switch to a CPU specific version or change the network type:

  1. Unpack the zip file below to your hard drive.
  2. Rename the binary that matches your CPU to highwire.prg; highwire.000 for 68000 ST/STE, .030 for TT/Falcon, .040/.060 for accelerators, .v4e for ColdFire.
  3. In modules, rename the .ovl file that matches your network, e.g. mintnet.ovl, to network.ovl.
  4. Run highwire.prg.

Configuration options (GREY_PALETTE, IMG_ASPECT, LINE_SPACING, CACHEDIR and more) are documented in example.cfg\highwire.cfg.

Requirements

  • Any Atari ST/STE/Mega/TT/Falcon or emulator with at least 1MB RAM (4MB recommended) and a hard drive.
  • To go online, you'll need a STinG compatible network adapter - try MD/Net, the WiFi project this work was built to test, if you don't already have one.
  • No GDOS of any kind required.

All credit for HighWire itself belongs to the HighWire Development Team — this branch just helps it reach the machines and resolutions that don't work well with GDOS, and makes it look nice in low and medium resolution modes.

Bug reports issue relating to this build to this fork's issues, not upstream.
