Security

  • pypdf, the library PDFApps uses to read and write PDF files, is updated to 6.19.0. The 1.15.0 downloads included pypdf 6.18.1, which has three published advisories where a specially crafted PDF can use excessive memory or keep the app busy. One of them could freeze the window for close to a minute when saving filled-in form fields in the editor.
  • urllib3 is updated to 2.8.0, closing three published advisories.

Fixes & improvements

  • OCR now runs in the language you pick. Before, every run used the first installed language in alphabetical order, whatever was selected: with English and Portuguese installed, choosing Portuguese ran English.
  • The OCR language list shows only the languages installed on your computer, keeps your choice, and starts on your interface language when it is installed, otherwise English. If the chosen language is no longer installed, PDFApps tells you instead of running in another language.
  • Chinese and Dutch now appear in the OCR language list under their translated names instead of short codes.
  • PDFApps no longer closes when you run OCR with a Tesseract older than 3.05, or one whose version it cannot recognise.
  • On Windows, running OCR or compressing a PDF no longer opens a console window.
  • OCR now works in the Snap package. It failed because PDFApps could not find the language files bundled with it.
  • Compression in the Snap package now runs its stronger stage, which was skipped without a message before, so files could come out much larger than they should.
  • On Linux, compressing some damaged PDFs no longer hangs for about two minutes.
  • Starting PDFApps from a terminal no longer prints a deprecation notice.
  • The Help button opens the current documentation page instead of a section that no longer existed.
