Releases: new-tricks/tricks

v0.8.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 10 Oct 15:14

Added

  • cargo install tricks --locked installs New Tricks from crates.io, where every release is published. tricks upgrade leaves a Cargo install to Cargo.

Changed

  • The crate is at the root of the repository: from a checkout, cargo install --path . --locked (was --path crates/newtricks).

v0.7.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 27 Sep 19:01

Fixes found in the 0.6.1 review (#11), carried over to 0.7.

Security

  • Published provenance never contains credentials or local paths. PROVENANCE.md and the Tricks-Source: commit trailer name the source repo by its origin remote with any user:token@ removed, or local:<folder> when there is no remote. Before, a credentialed remote URL was published as is, and a source repo without a remote published its local path. If you published from a repo whose origin URL contains a token, check your distribution repository's history and rotate that token.

Fixes

  • tricks update exits 1 when it stops on conflicts or a skill fails (--dry-run still exits 0), so scripts and CI notice.
  • Inside an experiment's worktree, tricks diff <skill> compares that checkout: working and head are the experiment's.
  • Links that are copies say copy instead of live in link, list --links and the VS Code Links view.
  • VS Code: tricks.toml completion and validation now match the configuration New Tricks reads (policies review, pinned, paused; lint.strict-spec; removed keys such as use dropped). A unit test keeps them in step.

Experiments

tricks experiment replaces edit, use and merge. An experiment is one skill on its own branch, experiment/<skill>/<name>, checked out in .tricks/work/.

tricks experiment start changelog-writer@terse # prints the skill's path in the worktree
tricks link changelog-writer@terse --to ~/code/my-app # this project's agents load it, live
tricks experiment commit changelog-writer@terse -m "Terser output"
tricks experiment merge changelog-writer@terse # or --pr; also: list, discard, shell

merge is a normal git merge --no-ff of the whole branch, then removes the branch and worktree (--keep to keep them). --pr pushes the branch and opens a pull request; run it again to push review fixes. use, tricks.work.toml, draft/<skill> and skill-only merges (--whole-branch) are gone.

What a link deploys

  • link <skill>: the skill in your main checkout as it is, whatever branch is checked out, uncommitted edits included. Links no longer stay on the committed version during tricks update.
  • link <skill>@<experiment|branch>: that branch's checkout, live. A branch that isn't checked out anywhere gets a worktree in .tricks/work/, removed with its last link.
  • link <skill>@<tag|commit>: a frozen snapshot in the store.

Also

  • Git commands that change your repositories are printed on stderr as $ git … (-v for all of them, -q or --json for none).
  • unlink and untry without a skill (or with --all), and experiment discard when it would lose work, ask for confirmation (--yes to skip).
  • Agents are detected on first run and written to your user config. At user scope a skill goes into the fewest agent directories that reach all of them, so no agent loads it twice.
  • create -b <branch> and vendor -b <branch> switch the source repo to a branch first.
  • search --sort relevance|installs|stars|updated|name, --min-installs, --min-stars, and --facets to see how matches spread over categories, catalogs, owners, licences and trust.
  • "User scope" replaces "user level" throughout; --global is unchanged.
  • VS Code extension: Start, Commit, Merge and Discard Experiment, and Open Experiment Folder.
