The Finder Folder Is Not Loading NextCloud Content

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing an issue with the Nextcloud desktop client on my Mac. The folder for virtual file synchronization is not loading its content in Finder, even though the Nextcloud client shows that everything is fully synced. Here’s what I’ve checked so far:

My internet connection is stable.

The Nextcloud server is accessible via a web browser without any issues.

The desktop client is updated to the latest version.

I’ve confirmed that the folder is selected for synchronization in the client settings.

There are no apparent error messages in the client.

I’ve temporarily disabled antivirus and firewall to rule out interference, but the issue persists .

File permissions for the local folder seem to be correct.

I’m using a Mac running macOS 15.1.1 (Sonoma), with the latest available version of the desktop client installed.

Despite these checks, the folder in Finder remains empty, and no files are visible, even though the client reports that the sync is complete.

Has anyone encountered a similar issue or have suggestions on how to resolve this? Are there specific logs I should check to identify the problem?

I I downloaded owncloud desktop to have a similar experience, but with nextcloud I still have not solved it..

I just tried the owncloud client for mac, but it's not the native vfs, but rather the same vfs, which is declared as experimental in the standard nextcloud client for mac. would be lovely if someone could figure out what the issue is here to make native macos on-demand sync work. Also for context I have tried multiple times reinstalling and resetting it up, without any success

I reinstalled the client and restarted my Mac afterwards. This solved the problem for me.

On macOS Sequoia:
1/ Install nextcloud desktop client (3.15.3 in my case)
2/ Log into nextcloud instance
3/ Do not sync any folder!
4/ Go to nextcloud settings (notice the standard sync tab is empty), go to virtual file sync tab and enable virtual files
5/ Reboot the computer

Check that nextcloud desktop is running and that the virtual file sync tab says "All synced!". The Nextcloud part in the Finder's "Locations" should now properly show files.

It's quite slower than on windows, but it does work.

Had the same problem today and managed to solve it. I initially installed version 3.16.0-rc1, but something broke, so I uninstalled it and reverted to the current stable version. That's when this problem appeared, as if the cloud folder was still trying to connect through the old client installation.

My solution:

1. Uncheck "Enable virtual files", then remove your account from the Nextcloud client. This should ensure that the folder used by Nextcloud inside ~/Library/CloudStorage/ gets removed.
2. Close and uninstall Nextcloud.
3. Go into your ~/Library folder and search for all files containing "nextcloud" in their names. Delete all those files and folders.
4. Reboot.
5. Follow all the steps provided by @msklywenn. It didn’t work for me after reinstalling until I rebooted, so that step is important:

1/ Install nextcloud desktop client (3.15.3 in my case)

I started experiencing a similar issue when I switched my server to a different IP address in my local network. After multiple resets and full wipes of the Nextcloud app on my client device, virtual files seems to be completely broken. I've followed the steps above to no success :(

Standard file sync continues to work fine.

@AllElitePhysio Nothing to report I'm afraid. I've pretty much given up fixing this on my end, if complete resets of the app don't do anything I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. I've gone back to using standard file sync which works fine? Best solution I have at the moment 😐
