ONIE-installable Open Network Linux image for the STORDIS BF2556X-1T (Tofino-1 P4 switch).

Why kernel 4.9.75 specifically

stratumproject/stratum-bfrt:9.2.0 ships prebuilt bf_kdrv.ko for several kernel versions. 4.9.75 is the only one whose bf_kdrv has zero retpoline thunk references (__x86_indirect_thunk_*). The ONL builder image's gcc 4.9.2 doesn't support -mindirect-branch=thunk, so we can't build a kernel that exports those thunks — making 4.9.75 the only kernel where the precompiled bf_kdrv actually loads.

Patches applied vs upstream ONL

  1. Mirror fix — mirrors.kernel.org → archive.debian.org (Jessie is EOL).
  2. Drop Mellanox packages from amd64-base-packages.yml (no source in our fork).
  3. Kernel config: enable MEMCG, BLK_CGROUP, CGROUP_PIDS, CGROUP_DEVICE, USER_NS, IP_NF_RAW=y, BRIDGE_NETFILTER=y — required to run Docker.
  4. Non-interactive kbuild: tools/make/kbuild.mk runs make olddefconfig after cp $(K_CONFIG) .config.
  5. Trim BUILD_ARCHES_jessie to amd64 in the top-level Makefile — ppc/armel loader-initrd builds fail trying to cross-arch install x86-64-stordis platform-config packages.
  6. Drop iproc-specific patches that don't apply to 4.9.75 (brcm-iproc-4.14, drivers-usb-phy-phy-xgs-iproc, drivers-i2c-busses-xgs_iproc_smbus).
  7. Point both stordis platforms at *kernel-4-9 and ship onl-kernel-4.9-lts-x86-64-all-modules.

Installation

Boot the switch into ONIE rescue/install mode, then point the ONIE installer at the URL of this asset (e.g. via DHCP option 114 or onie-discovery-stop && onie-nos-install <url>). Full procedure with timing/troubleshooting in docs/switch/install.md.
