Native Linux port of Notepad++ / macOS Nextpad++, built on GTK4 + Scintilla. amd64 + arm64.

One feature towers over everything else this cycle: Nextpad++ now runs in your terminal. A new command, npp, gives you the same editor — same syntax highlighting, same themes, same preferences — inside GNOME Terminal, Konsole, kitty, tmux, or an SSH session to your Linux box. Around it: panels dock at the bottom, the interface localization got a big cleanup, keyboard shortcuts stopped misbehaving, and official Arch Linux packages join the family. This is also the first release where Linux and macOS ship together at feature parity — macOS lives at nextpad-plus-plus-macos.

npp — Nextpad++ in your terminal (0.9.0, beta)

  • Same Scintilla engine, every language highlighted — including your User Defined Languages — your themes and preferences, live-synced with the GUI app, even over SSH
  • Tabs, find/replace overlays, code folding, command palette (^P), menus (F10), Document List / Function List / Project / Folder panels on a dock
  • Hot exit: ^Q quits instantly, unsaved changes survive the relaunch
  • Nothing to install: every package ships /usr/bin/npp right next to the app (snap users: nextpad.npp)
  • For IT: no network, no elevation, no persistence — it behaves exactly like any packaged terminal editor

New features

  • Bottom-dockable panels — every panel gets left / right / bottom dock buttons; bottom panels sit side-by-side; sides and sizes are remembered
  • Localization pass (#252) — hundreds of previously-English spots now translated across all 137 languages; Escape and dialog shortcuts work in translated alerts (#308, #294); the Nepali catalog — silently broken in every build ever shipped — found and repaired on Linux
  • Official Arch Linux packages (.pkg.tar.zst, amd64 + arm64) — you asked (#4), it shipped

Shortcuts

  • Remapped shortcuts with Shift work (#268) · rectangular selection survives custom keys (#266) · remapped menu shortcuts survive a restart · Shortcut Mapper shows real GTK defaults · bonus: the stock Ctrl+Shift+[ ] / \ paragraph/word-part selection keys — dead on every GTK Scintilla app — now work

Everyday polish

  • Status bar: encoding/EOL segments open their menus, INS/OVR toggles overtype (#313); live zoom indicator with double-click reset (PR #325)
  • Paste with Hyperlinks (#299) · EOL preference respected for new/opened files (#312) · Find in Files sub-folders recursion fixed (#317) · no phantom "new 1" tab (#315) · split-view save updates the right tab (#321) · hide-toolbar checkbox (#319) · command-palette appearance (#314) · calltip word-chars (#322)
  • Quitting is much faster; failed auto-backups keep the last good copy; Import Style Theme no longer destroys the theme it replaces
  • (Typing in Chinese, Japanese and Korean: the CJK input fixes in the macOS 1.1.1 notes were already correct here — GTK 4's input pipeline composes at every caret out of the box)

Linux issue tracker — cleared

  • Dropping a file onto the editor opens it instead of pasting its path (#1)
  • The editor right-click menu is now bulletproof — it sized itself out of existence in a band across the middle of the window on several distros (#3)
  • Clicking far beyond a line end no longer strands the caret in virtual space (#5, #6)
  • Window position restored on X11; no duplicate scratch tab after a restart (#7)

Plugins & API

  • Windows docking API parity: NPPM_DMMREGASDCKDLG with a faithful tTbData, plus NPPM_DMMSHOW / NPPM_DMMHIDE / NPPM_DMMUPDATEDISPINFO — Windows docking code ports with a typedef swap; uMask picks the default region, the user's choice always wins, panels self-restore; validated field-for-field against the original Windows Docking.h
  • Startup hardened so early panel-showing plugins can't disturb saved layouts
  • Full message/notification reference on the Resources page; plugins built for v1.1.0 keep working unchanged

Install

  • Debian / Ubuntu / Mint: sudo apt install ./Nextpad++v1.1.1_amd64.deb (or _arm64)
  • Fedora / RHEL 10+ / openSUSE: sudo dnf install ./Nextpad++v1.1.1_amd64.rpm (or _arm64)
  • Arch Linux: sudo pacman -U Nextpad++v1.1.1_amd64.pkg.tar.zst (or _arm64)

Built on Ubuntu 24.04 — needs GTK 4.14+ / glibc 2.38+. Also on the Snap Store (snap install nextpad).
