Note from last year (still applicable) (click to expand/shrink)

NOTE FOR 2024 - 2025 SCHOOL YEAR:

After extensive testing, I have determined that it is now required that you install Python 3.10.0 from the Microsoft Store instead of Software Center due to RCPS changes with the Python installation. This creates a dilemma for students as it may no longer function correctly on student laptops. A solution will be searched for in the coming weeks (written Aug 12, 2024), so check back here if you would like this script later. Note: This does NOT affect teachers, teachers laptops will still be able to execute the script assuming they download from the Microsoft Store instead.

How to Install

If you are installing for the first time (click to expand/shrink)
On a Roanoke County Public Schools computer (click to expand/shrink)

(1) Open "Microsoft Store", you should be able to find this by clicking the Search bar in the bottom right and typing in Microsoft Store.
(2) Search for "Python 3.10". Click the first result and press "Get" and wait for it to complete.
(3) Once Python finishes downloading, scroll to the bottom of this webpage and click on the blue text entitled "install.py" or just click here. This will download the installer.
(4) Move the installer to where you want the script to be installed to.
(5) Double click the "install.py" file and follow the directions

On any other computer (click to expand/shrink)

(1) Download the "install.py" file attached below or click here.
(2) Move the file to where you want the script to install to.
(3) Double click the file and follow the prompts there.

If you already have the program (click to expand/shrink)

(1) Open the program by double-clicking on "ABDayDetector.py"
(2) Type the word "version", you should see something like this

This script is using ABDayDetector version *whatever version you're on* (Python 3.10.0) (Is dev build? FALSE)
You are *x* versions behind!

(3) If the program says "You are x versions behind" instead of "You are on the latest version," then you know you need to upgrade.
(4) Next, type "upgrade". The program should automatically fetch the files from the server.
(5) Restart by typing "restart" (or "rs")

Changes

  • [1.8] If the program fails to boot up correctly, it will automatically detect it failed and prompt the user to upgrade their version or reinstall.
  • [1.8.1] Add development tool '--force-error ' to sys arguments
  • [1.8.2] Show error message upon typing in a date if the system has fatally exited instead of a cryptic error message.
  • [1.8.3] Add error handling for individual commands instead of quitting the program upon first error.
  • [1.8.4] Add a log wait startup option for development use (allows program-wide hold between each log message)
  • [1.8.5] Fix bug from GitHub structure changes preventing installation or upgrading
