Jotbay 1.11.0

Conflicts get settled, problems reach you, and the search field is one
keystroke away.

When a note has two versions

Editing the same note on two machines keeps both versions, and until now
Jotbay left the second copy in your folder without ever mentioning it again.

Now a row appears above your files whenever this has happened, and opens a
list with three choices per note: keep this version, use the other machine's,
or keep both as separate notes. Whichever you pick, both versions stay in the
note's history. If the two copies turned out identical, it says nothing is at
stake and offers one button to tidy up.

In a terminal: jotbay conflicts.

Problems reach you

A sync failure, a conflict, a file too large to sync, or a machine that has
been silent for over a day now posts a system notification. One notification
when the problem starts, not one per retry, and it is withdrawn when the
problem clears.

Find a note with one key

Press Cmd+K (Ctrl+K on Windows and Linux) anywhere in the window and start
typing. Esc backs out.

The buttons in the notes pane were reorganised so that where a button is tells
you what it acts on.

New Note moved to the toolbar

Starting a note is an action on your whole vault, so it now sits in the window
toolbar next to Sync, where macOS puts actions like it.

Recently Deleted is a place

It used to be a button labelled "Deleted", which reads as a filter and sat
beside an action, so it looked like one. Recovering a note is somewhere you
go, the way Photos and Mail treat it. It is now the last row of your file
list, with an arrow, and it stays there when a folder is empty, because
whoever just deleted their last note is exactly who wants it.

"History" is now "Version history"

The old name sat one tab away from Activity, which is also a history, of
something else entirely. Both readings were possible. The new name says what
it is a history of: this note.

Open in editor keeps its name and gains an outward arrow, which is the part
that says the note opens outside Jotbay.

When a machine stops working, Jotbay now tells you what happened and what to
do about it.

A machine that goes quiet

A machine that cannot sign in to your git remote cannot report that it cannot
sign in, because reporting means sending it. From every other machine it
simply stops appearing, and "not answering" looked the same whether it had
been quiet for four minutes or four days.

Silence past a day is now its own state. It is amber rather than grey, it is
counted with the machines that need attention, and it says "silent for over a
day". At that point the silence is the message.

Failures that say what to do

Two examples, both taken off real machines.

Authentication failed is git repeated back at you. It now says that the
machine can no longer sign in, and names the command that fixes it.

failed to get: -25308 is a macOS keychain code. It means the saved
credential is there but needs someone signed in at that machine, which is
what you see over SSH. It now says that.

The window now opens on your files, and every way of installing Jotbay can
update itself.

Files first

The window opened on Activity, which answered "what did each machine do"
before "what is in my notes". Files is now the tab you land on. Activity is
still there, one click away.

Updating works from a disk image too

jotbay upgrade already handled Homebrew, Debian packages and Windows. A copy
installed from the macOS disk image was the last one that could not update
itself, and it now can: Jotbay downloads the new disk image, checks that macOS
accepts the app inside it, and replaces the installed copy.

It checks the signature before it replaces anything. The app is only swapped
in if macOS is willing to open it, and the old one goes back if the swap does
not finish.

jotbay upgrade, or the button in the window.

One command updates Jotbay, whatever you installed it with, and finishes the
job.

jotbay upgrade, or the button in the window

jotbay upgrade

Jotbay works out which installer owns this copy and uses it for you: Homebrew
for a cask, apt for a Debian package, and a direct replacement on Windows and
for a script install. The button in the window does the same thing. There is
nothing to copy and nothing to know about how the machine was set up.

Before this, only a script install could update itself. A cask, a package or
the disk image each needed a different command, and Jotbay printed the command
instead of running it.

It restarts the background sync

Replacing the files does not replace the program that is already running, on
any of these systems. Every update now restarts the background sync, so the
machine really uses the new version instead of holding it on disk.

Without this a machine kept syncing with the previous version, and reported
that version as its own to every other machine. Checking the list of machines
gave the wrong answer in the reassuring direction.

The window still asks you to restart it, because a window cannot replace itself
while you are looking at it.

It checks that the update worked

Every installer can report success and change nothing. Jotbay now runs the
program on disk afterwards and asks its version. If it is not the version that
was just installed, it says so:

✖ brew reported success, but this machine is still on 1.9.2.

Three of the ways Jotbay can update itself were able to claim a success they
had not achieved. Each was found by running the real thing on a real machine.

Updating is now one action on every platform, from the terminal or from the
window, whichever you prefer.

One command, or one button

Before, this depended on how you installed Jotbay. A Homebrew cask needed
brew upgrade --cask jotbay, a Debian package needed a download and an apt
command, and the macOS disk image needed a browser. jotbay upgrade refused
all three, because those files belong to their installer.

Jotbay now finds out which installer owns this copy and uses it for you:

jotbay upgrade

The button in the window does the same thing. Nothing to copy, and nothing to
know about how the machine was set up.

It also finishes the job

Replacing the files does not replace the program that is already running.
Every update now restarts the background sync, so the machine really is using
the new version instead of holding it on disk. Without this a machine kept
syncing with the previous version, and told every other machine that this was
the version it had.

The window still asks you to restart it, because a window cannot replace
itself while you are looking at it.

Jotbay_1.9.0_amd64.AppImage Every other Linux distribution.

Each of those includes the app and the jotbay command. The other files are for
the install scripts, which download them for you.

Update to this one

This is the release that adds the one-command update, so this time use the
route you installed with: brew upgrade --cask jotbay, the installer, or the
package. From here on, jotbay upgrade is enough.
