v0.5.3
Fixes the bar briefly shifting right after clicking a hidden item.
Debugging with an instrumented build showed the shift was Overhang's own doing, not macOS. A
fallback from earlier versions collapsed the chevron to make room for the clicked item, which
slid the whole bar 22 points right, left a dead unclickable stub where the chevron was, and
recovered after exactly 8 seconds. It could also fire on top of a working click-through when
an item's menu opened slower than the success check allowed.
The fallback is gone. Clicking a hidden item now either opens its own menu, or brings its app
to the front. The bar never moves. The success check also waits longer for slow menus, so the
front-the-app fallback is rare.
Install — download Overhang.dmg, drag Overhang to Applications, launch. Or:
brew install --cask nicglazkov/tap/overhang
Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Universal, Apple silicon and Intel. Notarized and stapled.
v0.5.2
Keeps the chevron recognisable while macOS reflows the bar.
When an item leaves the bar, or a hidden item is drawn for menu tracking, WindowServer briefly
shifts the whole third-party run to the right. The rightmost item sits against the immovable
system cluster and gets its window clipped to about 16 points for a second or two; with a
centred glyph that left a sliver of the chevron. The glyph is now anchored to the leading edge,
so the clipped item still reads and clicks as the chevron. The layout itself is macOS
behaviour and restores on its own.
Install — download Overhang.dmg, drag Overhang to Applications, launch. Or:
brew install --cask nicglazkov/tap/overhang
Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Universal, Apple silicon and Intel. Notarized and stapled.
v0.5.1
Detects a class of hidden item that 0.5.0 missed.
macOS usually marks an icon it stops drawing as offscreen, which is what Overhang's menu was
built on. A layout quirk can instead park a newly registered icon inside the notch dead zone
while still marking it onscreen: composited behind the physical notch, impossible to see or
click, and invisible to the old detector. Overhang now treats anything whose frame ends left
of the display's safe area as hidden too, so such items appear in the menu like any other.
On displays without a notch the extra rule is inert.
Install — download Overhang.dmg, drag Overhang to Applications, launch. Or:
brew install --cask nicglazkov/tap/overhang
Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Universal, Apple silicon and Intel. Notarized and stapled.
v0.5.0
Removes the hide feature, and with it the app's second status item.
The spacer that powered Hide more and Hide less turned out to be a design leftover: it could
only ever push more icons off the bar, never bring one back, and macOS gave it a permanent
17 point footprint that sat in the bar as a blank clickable item even when idle. Overhang now
owns exactly one status item, the chevron.
Everything in the product's actual job is unchanged: finding what macOS dropped, listing it
with app icons, click-through, and the reveal fallback. Settings slims to launch at login and
click-through.
If you used the hide feature, this release removes it; 0.4.1 remains available.
Install — download Overhang.dmg, drag Overhang to Applications, launch. Or:
brew install --cask nicglazkov/tap/overhang
Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Universal, Apple silicon and Intel. Notarized and stapled.
v0.4.1
Fixes a notarization defect in the v0.4.0 disk image.
The 0.4.0 DMG was itself notarized and stapled, but the app inside it was packaged before its
ticket existed, so it carried no staple. On a Mac with a network connection Gatekeeper covers
this by checking with Apple online, which is why it went unnoticed; a user whose first launch
happened offline could be blocked. In 0.4.1 the app is notarized and stapled before any
packaging, and both the app inside the DMG and the zip now validate offline.
No functional changes. If 0.4.0 installed and ran for you, nothing about the app itself is
different.
Install — download Overhang.dmg, drag Overhang to Applications, launch. Or:
brew install --cask nicglazkov/tap/overhang
Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Universal, Apple silicon and Intel.
v0.4.0, Overhang
Superseded by v0.4.1.
The DMG in this release has a notarization gap: the disk image is stapled, but the app inside
it was packaged before its ticket existed, so the app itself carries no staple. On a connected
Mac Gatekeeper verifies with Apple online and everything works; a first launch with no network
can be blocked. The app binary is otherwise identical in function to 0.4.1.
Use v0.4.1 instead.
