Dogear 0.1.1

@ninepointlabs ninepointlabs released this 19 Oct 18:23

Dogear 0.1.1 brings Dogear to more of Linux, and a few kind touches for everyone.

What's new

  • An AppImage for other Linux distros. dogear-0.1.1-x86_64.AppImage has its own Python and Qt inside, so it runs on most x86_64 Linux systems from 2022 on (glibc 2.34 or newer: Ubuntu 22.04+, Debian 12+, Fedora, openSUSE and others). chmod +x it and run it. --install-desktop-entry adds it to your app menu and offers it for PDFs, or let Gear Lever or AppImageLauncher take care of it. Off Omarchy, Dogear now follows your desktop's light or dark setting.
  • About Dogear, from the library header, Settings or the shortcuts list (?): the version, the MIT license, the support address and a button to copy version details.
  • Narrow windows, like half a screen in a tiling window manager: the library and the reader tuck their extras away so the title and your marks always have room. All the keys still work.

Install

With autonomix-cli, which picks the right download and keeps Dogear updated:

autonomix-cli add https://github.com/ninepointlabs/dogear

Arch / Omarchy: download dogear-0.1.1-1-any.pkg.tar.zst below, then

sudo pacman -U dogear-0.1.1-1-any.pkg.tar.zst

Any other Linux: download dogear-0.1.1-x86_64.AppImage (added by the AppImage workflow a few minutes after this release goes up, with its .sha256).

The Arch package was built with makepkg from this tag's tarball in a clean archlinux:latest container; its check step ran all 118 tests, and it was installed with pacman -U there.

@ninepointlabs ninepointlabs released this 17 Oct 19:47

The first release of Dogear: a PDF reader for studying, made for Omarchy.

Website and demo video: https://dogear.ninepointlabs.com

What it does

  • Highlights and notes: five colors (1–5), a to highlight with a note; hover a highlight to read its note.
  • Fill in worksheet blanks by clicking them and typing. Dogear finds the answer lines on the page (drawn rules, underscores, dotted lines); Tab goes to the next one.
  • A library of every PDF you open: search that reaches inside your marks, sorting, categories, your own names for documents, and a kept copy of every PDF you mark up.
  • Outline, bookmarks, search, and it remembers where you stopped in every file.
  • Markdown export (Ctrl+E) for Obsidian: highlights, notes, bookmarks, and each answer under its question.
  • One library folder (~/Documents/Dogear, or any folder you choose) that you can sync between computers with Syncthing, Dropbox or Google Drive; edits merge, conflict copies included.
  • Keyboard first, follows your Omarchy theme live, works in narrow tiling windows. Never changes your PDFs; no network, no telemetry.

Install

With autonomix-cli, which installs the package and keeps Dogear updated from GitHub Releases:

autonomix-cli add https://github.com/ninepointlabs/dogear

Or by hand on Arch / Omarchy: download dogear-0.1.0-1-any.pkg.tar.zst below, then

sudo pacman -U dogear-0.1.0-1-any.pkg.tar.zst

pacman pulls in pyside6 and qt6-webengine (the Qt PDF library) from the official repos. packaging/PKGBUILD builds the same package from source.

The package was built with makepkg from this tag's tarball in a clean archlinux:latest container; its check step ran all 112 tests, and it was installed with pacman -U and started there.
