This work was created in context of the Infra4NextGenHackathon (11.6. - 16.6.). We analyzed the connection between the perceived income inequality and the support for policies for the poor based on the CRONOS3 waves 1 and 2.
We find that overall and in the most countries in the sample, there is a positive association between the perceived income inequality and the support for such policies, even after controlling for various covariates. Own income and meritocratic believes, on the other hand, are negatively associated with the support.
We suggest more education and sensibilization towards the own position in the income distribution and the income inequality in the country in order to increase the support for policies towards redistribution.
Importantly, since the data were collected with an observational design and due to the methods applied, no causal claims are possible.
