@nizwar nizwar released this 19 Oct 06:39

The first public preview of Avo: Android apps and games on your Mac, each in its own window.

Preview build. Avo is under active development. This build is signed ad hoc and is not notarized, and it does not update itself. Please report problems with Help › Report a Problem and an issue.

Install

  1. Download Avo-0.1.0-b35.dmg below and drag Avo to Applications.
  2. Open Avo once. macOS blocks it because the preview is not notarized: go to System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
  3. The Setup Assistant downloads Android from Google's public AOSP build server and starts it. Allow Avo's background item when macOS asks (System Settings › General › Login Items).

Requirements: a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or newer), macOS 15 or newer, and at least 10 GB of free disk space. For GPU rendering, which is recommended for games, install Google's Android Emulator (with Android Studio or the SDK command-line tools).

Highlights

  • Android apps as Mac apps. Every Android app opens in its own window, with its own Dock icon, Launchpad and Spotlight entries and ⌘Tab. In full screen, the menu bar and title bar appear when the pointer reaches the top of the screen.
  • Android 17 in its own VM. Avo boots an unmodified AOSP Cuttlefish image on Hypervisor.framework with avo-vmm, Avo's own engine.
  • Android versions with their own data. Changing the Android version never erases anything. You choose the data each version uses: the data it had before, Android data in another folder, or new data in an empty folder. Android 15, 14 and 13 are listed under Older Versions; they may not start on Apple silicon.
  • GPU rendering. Android draws on the Mac's GPU through gfxstream and MoltenVK, with native ASTC textures, a shader cache, frame-rate caps of 30, 60, 90 and 120 fps (or the display's own rate), render scale and sharpening.
  • Games. Key mapping on a game's touch controls with templates, shooter mode with mouse-look, and game controllers with a visual editor.
  • Mac integration.
    • Notifications, a shared clipboard, and links that open in your Mac's browser.
    • Drag and drop, screen translation (⌘⇧T), and screenshots and recordings with sound.
    • Keep on Top and Picture in Picture.
    • Android follows the Mac's appearance, time zone, clock, language and battery.
  • More.
    • Location, microphone, mock fingerprints and a shared folder.
    • Device profiles, and Android's data on an external drive.
    • System Status, optional Google Play, ADB support and avoctl.
    • Pause When Idle.

Fixed since the internal builds

  • Sound is no longer robotic, delayed, or silent after opening or switching apps.
  • Several apps can play sound at once, and the focused Mac window gets Android's focus.
  • Games that ask for 8-channel audio get stereo instead of failing.
  • Android's own factory reset and restart work.
  • First boots no longer report a false GPU failure.
  • The display: re-plugging no longer crashes it.
  • Android's Thread service no longer restarts every few seconds.
  • Closing an app's last window ends the app, and its window no longer opens again by itself.
  • Installing Google apps shows one realistic progress bar.

Known issues

  • Some games rate the VM as a low-end device. For example, Delta Force draws flat terrain at its MAX preset; a lower preset looks right.
  • Camera and Bluetooth are not supported.
  • Apps that need hardware attestation (most banking apps, some DRM and anti-cheat systems) generally do not run.
