@nodefive nodefive released this 04 Oct 14:35

FREE WOLF K8 Linux Controller — v1.0.1

Incremental release featuring automated system installation, high-resolution desktop integration, and legacy folder reorganization.

🚀 What's New in v1.0.1

  • Automated System Installer (install.sh):
    • One-command system-wide installation: sudo ./install.sh -i.
    • Automatically places binary in /usr/bin/freewolf-k8, creates /usr/bin/k8gui and /usr/bin/k8ctl symlinks, deploys .desktop launcher, installs icons, and configures /etc/udev/rules.d/ permissions.
    • Clean uninstallation option: sudo ./install.sh -u.
    • Integrated help: ./install.sh -h.
  • High-Resolution 500×500 Application Icon:
    • Replaced legacy Windows .ico files with high-resolution DeviceDriver.png across both the Rust and Legacy Python environments.
    • Installed to standard FreeDesktop directories (/usr/share/icons/hicolor/512x512/apps/freewolf-k8.png and /usr/share/pixmaps/freewolf-k8.png).
  • Connection Mode Documentation:
    • Clarified across all guides and READMEs that software control operates exclusively via USB Wired (0x1A2C:0x7C80) and 2.4 GHz RF Dongle (0x1A2C:0x7FFF). Bluetooth mode isolates vendor feature reports and does not support software control (hardware shortcuts continue to work across all modes).
  • Legacy Python Organization:
    • Renamed the Python prototype folder to FreeWolf-K8-Legacy/ with dedicated README documentation and updated dependencies (python3-tk).
  • Dynamic Versioning:
    • In-app GUI status bar now dynamically tracks the Cargo release version.

📦 Included Bundle Files

  • freewolf-k8: Compiled native release binary (Linux x86_64, GTK4/Libadwaita).
  • install.sh: System installer/uninstaller script.
  • k8gui: Convenience symlink for launching the desktop interface.
  • k8ctl: Convenience symlink for launching the command-line interface.
  • assets/: Application icons, screenshots, and keyboard diagram (kb_102.png).

Built in Rust with GTK4 and Libadwaita into a single, high-performance native ELF binary.

  • Direct Kernel HID Driver: Direct communication with /dev/hidraw* (Interface 1: VID: 0x1A2C, PID: 0x7C80 / 0x7FFF) using native ioctl(HIDIOCSFEATURE(8)).
  • 21 Lighting Modes: Complete support for all factory backlighting animations with real-time 5-level brightness (0–4) and speed (0–4) adjustments.
  • Audio Spectrum Visualizer (Music Mode): Equalizer-reactive RGB backlight rhythm with selectable patterns and timing.
  • Virtual Keyboard Macro Studio: Full keypress recording, customizable delay modes (Record Delay, No Delay, Fixed Default), repeat looping, and kernel-level /dev/uinput playback.
  • Multilingual Localization (i18n): 5 fully supported languages (English, Português, Español, Français, Deutsch) with live in-app language switching.
  • Built-in Hardware Documentation: 9-topic interactive manual covering technical specifications, FN shortcut mappings, connection pairing, battery care, switch replacement, and troubleshooting.
  • Automated udev Configuration: One-click root authorization helper (setup-udev) to configure non-root access to /dev/hidraw* and /dev/uinput.
