πŸ’ Overview

Ore Crops are the main focus of the mod, providing a renewable way to obtain resources while maintaining a balanced progression system.

This page covers everything you need to know about obtaining Ore Crop seeds, growing your first crops, and getting started with ore farming.

🌱 Getting Seeds

The first step is to obtain seeds. In most cases, Ore Crop seeds have a chance to drop when mining their corresponding ore. In the case of Ancient Debris, however, seeds are obtained by smelting the block instead.

Game Rules

Each Ore Crop seed has its own drop chance, which can be configured using game rules. Game rule values range from 0 to 1,000,000, with higher values increasing the chance of a seed dropping. Setting a value to 0 will completely disable that seed from dropping.

This allows server owners and modpack creators to directly control seed distribution in real time without needing to modify the mod itself.

Seeds From Ores

Most Ore Crop seeds have a chance to drop when their corresponding ores are mined.

The following conditions must be met for a seed to have a chance of dropping:

  1. The player must not be in Creative Mode.
  2. The tool in the player's main hand must not have Silk Touch.
  3. The corresponding seed drop chance game rule must not be set to 0.

If these conditions are met, the following process occurs when the ore is broken:

  1. A random integer between 1 and 1,000,000 is generated.
  2. The game rule value for the corresponding ore is checked to ensure it is within the valid range.
  3. The generated number is checked to see if it is less than or equal to the game rule value.
  4. If the check succeeds, the corresponding Ore Crop seed will drop.

The following ores can drop seeds:

  • Coal Ores
  • Copper Ores
  • Iron Ores
  • Emerald Ores
  • Lapis Ores
  • Redstone Ores
  • Gold Ores
  • Diamond Ores
  • Quartz Ores

Seeds From Smelting

Ancient Debris can produce Ore Crop seeds when it is smelted into Netherite Scrap.

The process works as follows:

  1. Ancient Debris is smelted into Netherite Scrap.
  2. The corresponding game rule value is checked to ensure it is within the valid bounds.
  3. If the game rule value is outside the valid bounds, it is set to the nearest valid value.
  4. The game rule is checked to ensure it is not set to 0. If it is 0, no seed will be produced.
  5. A random integer between 1 and 1,000,000 is generated.
  6. If the generated number is less than or equal to the game rule value, a seed is produced.
  7. The system checks for a Hopper above the Furnace or Blast Furnace.
    1. If a Hopper is present, its inventory is checked for space.
    2. If there is enough room, the seed is added to the Hopper.
  8. If there is no Hopper above the Furnace or Blast Furnace, the seed will attempt to drop from one of the six sides of the block where air is present.
    1. If none of the six sides contain air, the seed will not drop.

The following block can be smelted to produce seeds:

  • Ancient Debris

Fortune

Ore Crop seeds are affected by the Fortune enchantment. When a seed drop is successful, the base drop amount is always 1 seed.

Fortune can increase the number of seeds dropped based on the tool's enchantment level. With Fortune III, it is possible to obtain up to 4 seeds from a successful seed drop.

πŸ“š Crop Research

Before Ore Crop seeds can be planted, their corresponding crops must first be researched through the Research Screen.

By default, pressing R will open the Research Screen, where crop research can be started. Each player has their own progression for research.

First Slot

The first slot on the left side displays the required research item needed to begin researching the selected crop in the Research Tree.

Second Slot

The second slot is where the required seed is placed to begin researching the selected crop.

Research Button.

Once the required seed matches the selected research, the Research Button can be pressed to begin the research process. The seed will be consumed, and a research timer will begin.

Research times generally increase based on the rarity of the crop's corresponding ore and its distribution within the game. The table below lists each crop in the order it appears in the Research Tree.

Crop Time in ticks Real time (Hours)
Carbon Lily Crop 12,000 00:10:00
Cuprum Crop 36,000 00:30:00
Irontial Crop 24,000 00:20:00
Emerald Crop 72,000 1:00:00
Lapbarb Crop 84,000 1:10:00
Redtus Crop 96,000 1:20:00
Gorn Crop 6,000 00:05:00
Diamlic Crop 48,000 00:40:00
Quash Crop 60,000 00:50:00
Debage Crop 108,000 1:30:00

Researching all Ore Crops will take a total of 7 hours and 35 minutes. This does not include the additional time required to obtain the seeds needed to begin each research process.

🌾 Planting Crops

Ore Crops can be planted on any block included in the botanists_and_minerals:farmland block tag. By default, this tag only includes Farmland.

Crops must also meet specific light level requirements before they can be planted. The required light level depends on whether the planting location can see the sky:

  • Can see the sky – Requires a light level of 4 or higher.
  • Cannot see the sky – Requires a light level of 8 or higher.

The corresponding crop must also be researched before its seed can be planted, as described in the Crop Research section above. Players in Creative Mode can bypass this research requirement, while players in all other game modes must complete the required research before planting the crop.

πŸͺ΄ Growing Crops

Crops grow using Minecraft's random tick system. However, several additional factors and conditions can affect whether a crop grows and how quickly it progresses through its growth stages.

Every crop has 8 growth stages, ranging from 0 to 7, which are tracked using the age block state property. At the final stage (7), the crop is fully mature and will produce its raw crop product along with one seed when harvested. If a crop is harvested before reaching stage 7, it will only drop one seed.

Crops can also be harvested using flowing water, similar to vanilla Minecraft crops.

Farmland

The moisture level of Farmland affects the growth rate of Ore Crops. Crops planted on dry Farmland will grow 2 times slower than crops planted on moist Farmland.

Bees

Any entity included in the botanists_and_minerals:bees entity tag can pollinate Ore Crops while above them.

By default, Bees carrying pollen can pollinate crops when they fly over them. Vanilla Bees must have the HasNectar data value set to 1b for pollination to occur. Custom entities can provide the same functionality by using a custom logic NBT tag named HasNectar.

Bees have a 1% chance to pollinate the crop directly below them. Crops included in the botanists_and_minerals:seeds block tag will have their age increased when successfully pollinated.

Blocks between the Bee and crop can prevent pollination. Any block that is not included in the minecraft:air block tag or the botanists_and_minerals:blocks_to_pollinate_through block tag will block the pollination attempt.

The Bee's height also affects pollination. The Bee must be between 0 and 10 blocks above the crop's location for pollination to occur.

Light Level

Ore Crops require a light level of 9 or higher to grow to the next stage. This requirement applies regardless of whether the crop has access to the sky.

Crops can pop off if the light level becomes too low. The minimum light level required to remain planted depends on whether the crop can see the sky:

  • Can see the sky – Requires a light level of 4 or higher.
  • Cannot see the sky – Requires a light level of 8 or higher.

If a crop pops off, it will drop its seed. If the crop has reached its final growth stage and is ready to harvest, it will also drop its raw crop product.

Bone Meal

Bone Meal can be used to advance an Ore Crop to its next growth stage. It can only be used on crops at growth stages 0 through 6.

When Bone Meal is used, a random integer between 1 and 100 is generated. If the generated value is 26 or higher, the crop advances by one growth stage.

This gives Bone Meal an exact 75% chance of successfully advancing the crop by one stage with each use.

🌽 Harvesting Crops

Harvesting an Ore Crop will return the seed that was originally planted. If the crop has reached its final growth stage of 7, it will also drop its corresponding raw crop product. If harvested before reaching stage 7, only the seed will be returned.

The raw crop products that can be obtained from fully grown crops are listed below:

  • Raw Carbon Lily
  • Raw Cuprum
  • Raw Irontail
  • Raw Emnip
  • Raw Lapbarb
  • Raw Redtus
  • Raw Gorn
  • Raw Diamlic
  • Raw Quash
  • Raw Debage

Each raw crop product can be processed using a Grindstone to produce its corresponding Crop Dust.

πŸŽ‰ Trivia

Most Ore Crops are inspired by real-world crops and flowers. Their names generally combine the resource they produce with the plant that inspired their design, although some use different naming conventions.
