Spaceadom for Linux 1.0.155 (beta): no more stray middle click

Choose a tag to compare

@nur-arpon nur-arpon released this 12 Oct 19:51

Spaceadom for Linux — beta 1.0.155: the mouse ring, now without the stray click. Hold the middle mouse button and a ring of your apps opens around the pointer. Point at one and let go to launch it.

Plus everything from the first beta: hold Space and tap a letter to open, bring forward, minimise or bring back any app.

Early beta for modern desktops: GNOME (45+) and KDE Plasma 6 on Wayland, x86_64. Every build is installed and driven automatically on Ubuntu and Fedora, including real GNOME and KDE sessions and a fake mouse in CI, but nobody has used it on a real desktop yet. If something doesn't work, please open an issue.

What's in the Linux beta

  • New in 1.0.155: holding the middle button to open the ring no longer also clicks the app under the pointer; a quick middle click still works as normal. Spaceadom now takes over real mice (never touchpads or keyboards) and passes every other movement and button straight through; if anything goes wrong it lets go of the mouse at once.
  • The mouse ring (hold the middle button).
  • Space + letter: open, bring forward, minimise, bring back — any installed app (including Flatpaks).
  • The guide: hold Space to see your shortcuts.
  • The settings app with your installed apps and their icons, a tray icon, and start at login.
  • Not yet on Linux: touchpad edges, monitor brightness, special keys, app groups and little windows.

Install

Ubuntu / Debian: sudo apt install ./Spaceadom_1.0.155_amd64.deb
Fedora: sudo dnf install ./Spaceadom-1.0.155-1.x86_64.rpm
Then open Spaceadom from the app grid. Keyboard and mouse access is set up by the package. On GNOME, press Turn on the helper on the first-run screen. Updating from 1.0.153 on GNOME: the helper got a new version for the mouse ring, so log out and back in once. On Fedora's GNOME there is no tray icon unless you install the "AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support" extension — open Spaceadom from the app grid instead.

Anything else: chmod +x Spaceadom_1.0.155_amd64.AppImage && ./Spaceadom_1.0.155_amd64.AppImage, then press Set it up on the first-run screen and enter your password once. If it won't start, install FUSE 2 (sudo apt install libfuse2t64 / sudo dnf install fuse-libs).

Why it needs keyboard and mouse access: Wayland doesn't let apps see global keys or buttons, so Spaceadom reads the devices directly (like keyd and input-remapper), passes your mouse through a virtual pointer, and types through a virtual keyboard. A tapped Space always types a space.

Uninstall: sudo apt remove spaceadom or sudo dnf remove spaceadom; for the AppImage, delete the file. Settings live in ~/.config/Spaceadom.

The Linux beta does not update itself yet: new versions are installed by hand from this page.

Spaceadom is free and made by student developers. If it saves you time, ☕ buy me a coffee.

@nur-arpon nur-arpon released this 12 Oct 18:48

Released 13 October 2026.

Hold Space and tap a key to launch, focus or minimise any app. Hold a mouse button and a ring of your apps opens under the cursor — aim, let go.

Get it from the Microsoft Store (free), or download below. Already installed? Nothing to do. Spaceadom checks here once a day and updates itself silently. Try it in your browser first: nur-arpon.github.io/Spaceadom. On a Mac or Linux? See the Mac beta and the Linux beta.

What changed in 1.0.155

  • Typing calibration now learns from your real typing. Settings → Typing → Calibrate still runs the typing test, but the window now comes mainly from how you actually type day to day (Spaceadom keeps the last 14 days of timings on your PC: how soon letters follow Space, never which keys). The result says how many days it used. Not enough everyday typing yet? It says so and leaves your setting alone.
  • Fixed: a calibration from the typing test alone could set the window too tight, so ordinary typing fired shortcuts. Anyone who calibrated before this update is put back on the default (60 wpm, 280 ms) once; calibrate again any time.
  • Fixed: moving the Typing speed slider could make the Restore button disappear.
  • The Mac and Linux betas now have the mouse ring too: hold the middle button.

Spaceadom is free and made by student developers. If it saves you time, there's a Support Spaceadom card in Settings (☕ ko-fi.com/nurifran).

Downloads: x64-setup.exe is the recommended installer (per-user, no admin). arm64-setup.exe for Windows on ARM. .msi only if your workplace requires it — never install both. x64-portable.zip: unzip and run, nothing installed.

Spaceadom for Mac 1.0.154 (beta): the mouse ring

@nur-arpon nur-arpon released this 06 Oct 14:51

Spaceadom for Mac — beta 1.0.154: the mouse ring. Hold the middle mouse button and a ring of your apps opens around the pointer. Point at one and let go to launch it. A quick click is still a normal middle click.

Plus everything from the first beta: hold Space and tap a letter to open, bring forward, hide or bring back any app.

Early beta for Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and newer, macOS 13+). It is built and tested on GitHub's Mac servers, including the mouse ring's event handling, but nobody has used it on a real Mac yet. If something doesn't work, please open an issue.

What's in the Mac beta

  • New: the mouse ring (hold the middle button), on the screen the pointer is on.
  • Space + letter: open, bring forward, hide, bring back — any app in Applications.
  • The guide: hold Space to see your shortcuts.
  • The settings app, with your installed apps and their icons.
  • Lives in the menu bar; can start at login.
  • Not yet on Mac: touchpad edges, monitor brightness, window placement, special keys, app groups and little windows.

Installing (the app is not notarised yet, so macOS needs one extra click)

  1. Download Spaceadom_1.0.154_aarch64.dmg, open it and drag Spaceadom into Applications (replace the old one if asked).
  2. Open Spaceadom from Applications. macOS will refuse the first time.
  3. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway next to Spaceadom, then confirm.
  4. Spaceadom asks for Accessibility and Input Monitoring. Switch Spaceadom on in both lists. The same two permissions cover the mouse ring.

The Mac beta does not update itself yet: new versions are installed by hand from this page.

What's in the Linux beta

  • New: the mouse ring (hold the middle button). Known limit: Spaceadom reads the mouse without taking it over, so the middle click also reaches the app under the pointer (for example a paste in a terminal).
  • Space + letter: open, bring forward, minimise, bring back — any installed app (including Flatpaks).
  • The guide: hold Space to see your shortcuts.
  • The settings app with your installed apps and their icons, a tray icon, and start at login.

@nur-arpon nur-arpon released this 06 Oct 02:17

Released 6 October 2026.

What changed in 1.0.154

  • One Spaceadom for Windows, Mac and Linux. The Windows app now shares its keyboard engine with the Mac and Linux betas, so every improvement reaches all three. On Windows nothing looks or behaves differently.
  • Fixed: the app list could skip a Start-menu folder whose name ended in ".app".
  • Everything from 1.0.153: several apps on one shortcut, little windows (timer, notepad, round picture frame), typing calibration, and choosing your speakers and microphones.

Spaceadom is free and made by student developers. If it saves you time, there's a Support Spaceadom card in Settings (☕ ko-fi.com/nurifran).

@nur-arpon nur-arpon released this 05 Oct 23:17

Released 6 October 2026.

Hold Space and tap a key to launch, focus or minimise any app. Hold a mouse button and a ring of your apps opens under the cursor — aim, let go.

What's new in 1.0.153

  • Several apps on one shortcut. Put 2 to 6 apps on one key: the first press opens them all, the next minimises them all, the next brings them all back. Each group can just open, sit side by side, or tile in a grid on the screen your cursor is on. In the key editor: Several apps on this key? Make a group of apps.
  • Little windows: Timer, Notepad and a round Picture frame. Open them from the tray menu, or bind them to a key under Special keys → Little windows. Each has a pin to stay on top. The timer keeps counting while its window is closed and chimes when it's done; the notepad saves as you type; the frame shows any picture in a circle — scroll to zoom, drag to pan.
  • Typing calibration. Settings → Typing → Calibrate: type one sentence and Spaceadom measures your rhythm, then sets how it tells typing from shortcuts. One click puts your old setting back.
  • Choose your speakers and microphones. Next speaker can now cycle only the devices you tick, and there's a new Next microphone special key.
  • A little joy: click the Spaceadom logo in the top-left corner.
  • Fixed: with a lot of bindings, the last chips on the Space ring could be drawn but not picked. The ring now handles up to 96.

Spaceadom is free and made by student developers. If it saves you time, there's a Support Spaceadom card in Settings (☕ ko-fi.com/nurifran).

@nur-arpon nur-arpon released this 04 Oct 14:51

Released 5 October 2026.

Hold Space and tap a key to launch, focus or minimise any app. Hold a mouse button and a ring of your apps opens under the cursor — aim, let go.

What changed in 1.0.151

  • Cleaner, faster chip-to-notification flight. When you hold Space and tap a key, the app's chip now flies straight up or down into its notification instead of arcing, and several at once fly in a tidy order that never crosses.
  • New setting: Space Boost (off by default). A smoother, springier flight with no stretch or trail. Settings → Space Boost.
  • ☕ Buy me a coffee. Spaceadom is free and made by student developers. If it saves you time, there is now a Support Spaceadom card in Settings and a link in the tray menu (ko-fi.com/nurifran). No pop-ups, ever.
