SnapCap v1.16.3
SnapCap 1.16.3 - updates that actually install
- Fixed: automatic updates never ran on existing installs (the setting was stuck on "off" in saved settings, and the silent installer could not start without a Windows permission prompt). The setting is switched on once; you can turn it off in Settings.
- Updater: checks 5 s after launch and every 6 h, verifies the download (size, file type, SHA-256), installs when no editor is open or when you quit from the tray. Windows shows one UAC prompt per update (per-machine install).
- Installer: removes the duplicate old "SnapCap" entry in Windows Apps, cleans leftovers of the previous version, closes a running SnapCap, relaunches without elevation. Settings and library are never touched.
Installer: SnapCap-Setup-1.16.3.exe
SnapCap v1.16.2 — Onboarding welcome illustration
The first-run onboarding wizard's welcome page now shows a brand-matched illustration (camera aperture + lock, teal/blue #00d9a3->#3b82f6) in a white card above the "Welcome to SnapCap" title, instead of the old plain gradient-circle "S" badge.
Added
- Onboarding wizard welcome page illustration, loaded from
assets/onboarding-welcome.png.

SnapCap v1.16.1
Auto-update now on by default
"Automatically download and install updates" (Settings > General) is now on by default for new installs, matching every other tool in this portfolio - a fresh install gets silent background updates without any extra step, no more relying on a tray notification you have to click through to a download page yourself.
If you already have SnapCap installed and previously left this off, your saved preference is untouched.
v1.16.0 - Installer language handoff + language-purity sweep
The language you pick in the installer is now the language the app opens in - no more choosing English/Hebrew twice, and no OS-locale guessing.
Added
- The installer now writes your chosen language directly into SnapCap's own settings file the moment install finishes, so the app opens in that language on first launch - without ever touching an existing user's saved preference on a reinstall or update.
Fixed
- Hardcoded English strings that stayed in English even when running in Hebrew: the Editor's window title, its entire tool panel and menu bar, several sidebar buttons and AI/OCR/redaction dialogs, the onboarding wizard's window title, and the crash/uninstall dialogs.

SnapCap v1.15.0 — GIF recording + Color Picker
Researched three real competitors before deciding what to add: ShareX (the dominant free/open-source power-user tool), Greenshot, and Snagit. Verified against the actual current code first — SnapCap already matched ShareX/Snagit on scrolling capture (ScrollCapture) and pin-to-screen (PinWindow), so those weren't touched. Two real, feasible gaps were found and closed:
Added
- GIF recording — ShareX ships region GIF capture as a core feature (default hotkey Ctrl+Shift+PrintScreen); Greenshot has none. A full video pipeline (audio, long recordings, ffmpeg/MP4) was scoped out as too big a lift for this pass. What shipped: select a region, a small floating HUD shows a recording dot + elapsed time + Stop button while frames are captured (default 8 fps, up to 15s — both configurable in Settings → General), then Pillow encodes one animated
.gif. New tray item + hotkey (defaultCtrl+Shift+G). - Color Picker — ShareX has a dedicated screen color sampler with a magnified loupe and live HEX/RGB readout, separate from its editor; SnapCap had nothing equivalent. Move the mouse anywhere on screen to preview the color under the cursor, click to copy its HEX code to the clipboard. New tray item + hotkey (default
Ctrl+Alt+C).
Also
- Both features are fully bilingual (English/Hebrew) and follow the existing dark-theme/RTL conventions.
- 14 new unit tests (126 total, all passing) covering the capture loop, GIF encoding, color sampling, and translations.
Full history: CHANGELOG.md (local, gitignored — see repo history for prior release notes).
SnapCap v1.14.0 — Settings clarity pass
Settings clarity pass, and a smarter onboarding language default
Added
- Short muted explanations under Settings options that weren't obvious from their name alone: Skip editor on capture, Auto-redact PII, Redaction style, Auto-update (vs. "check for updates only"), Show desktop widget, Export Diagnostics, and the four Upload-tab webhook/Imgur fields.
- A short usage note at the top of Settings → Hotkeys.
Changed
- The first-run onboarding wizard's language page now starts pre-selected to match your Windows display language, instead of always starting on English. You still confirm (or change it) with one click before continuing — nothing is switched silently, and the app's own saved default language is unchanged.
Verified, not changed
- Confirmed the standalone installer's language toggle never persists anywhere the main app reads (it only translates the installer's own screens) — so there was no real "duplicate ask" signal to remove between installer and app. Full write-up in CHANGELOG.md.
- The onboarding wizard's "Skip setup" button was already visible on every page — no change needed.

SnapCap v1.13.0
Export Diagnostics + installer High Contrast support
- New "Export Diagnostics" button (Settings > Advanced, and About dialog) bundles your log file, version.json, a redacted config.json, and a system-info summary into one .zip - for sending to support. Every API key, webhook, and upload-target credential is redacted before anything touches disk.
- Fixed: the installer wizard was the last window that didn't honor Windows High Contrast - it now reads system colors like every other window in the app.
SnapCap v1.12.2
Fix: the uninstall registry entry never wrote a size, so Windows Settings > Apps showed a blank size for SnapCap. Now computed from the real installed files.
SnapCap v1.12.1
Desktop widget is now off by default (opt-in from Settings or the tray menu) instead of appearing automatically after install.
SnapCap v1.12.0
Unified cross-tool splash + installer identity (STANDARDS.md §21)
Splash screen and installer wizard now use the shared "one company" dark
palette (background #0B1220, panel #131B2E, border #1E2A45, accent #2F6FED,
accent-light #5B9AFF) instead of SnapCap's own teal/blue brand colors — in
these two places only. The running app itself (tray, widget, Library,
Editor) is unchanged this round.
Changed
- Installer wizard (
build/build_installer.py): DARK/PANEL/BORDER/MUTED
updated to the shared values; RED/BLUE renamed ACCENT/ACCENT_LIGHT
(#00d9a3/#3b82f6 -> #2F6FED/#5B9AFF) across buttons, checkboxes, radio
buttons, progress bar, and the banner logo badge gradient (the "S"
letterform itself is unchanged). - Next/Finish button text switched from dark navy (#1a1a2e) to light
(#EAEAEA) — the new medium-blue accent needs light text for AA contrast
(4.9:1 per STANDARDS §21.1), unlike the old light-teal accent which
worked with dark text. Same fix applied to the Qt palette's
HighlightedText role. - Splash screen (
splash_screen.py+assets/logo-mark.svg): background
gradient, border glow, muted text, and the logo badge gradient updated to
match the same shared palette.
Verified by rendering both the installer wizard (all 5 pages) and the
splash screen offscreen and sampling pixel colors directly — background,
accent, and button text all matched the spec exactly. All 106 existing
tests pass unchanged.
