Hybrid Heaven: Recompiled v1.0.1

@github-actions github-actions released this 04 Oct 23:53

On-screen touch controls (Android)

Play on a phone with no gamepad: a full N64 controller is drawn over the game. Written by @epic-ship-it for Goemon64Recomp-Android (#25) and ported here. Thank you!

  • Shows only when needed. Hidden while you use a gamepad, back the next time you touch the screen. Handhelds and phones with a pad attached start with a clear screen.
  • Settings → Touch: show the controls Auto / On / Off, adjust Stick Sensitivity, or Edit Layout to drag them where your hands want them.
  • ☰ button: tap to open the settings menu, long-press for size, opacity and vibration.
  • Laid out for Hybrid Heaven. Z sits in the top-left corner so it doesn't cover the radar, and L — which the game doesn't use — sits beside R.
  • Good to know: the buttons follow your Controls bindings, so a remap can make the labels inaccurate. There is no on-screen right stick, so Analog Camera needs a physical controller; the on-screen C-buttons still turn the game's own camera.
  • New permission: vibrate, for the buzz on each press. Granted automatically, no prompt.

Fixes

  • Settings → Restart works on Android. In v1.0.0, both To Title Screen and To App Menu closed the app instead of restarting it.

Other changes

  • Scrolling settings tabs (Android). The tab row now scrolls sideways so every tab fits. Drag it with a finger, or a controller scrolls it for you.

Nothing changes on Windows or Linux in this release.

Tested on a Retroid Pocket 5. If touch controls misbehave on your device, please open an issue.

Hybrid Heaven: Recompiled v1.0.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 04 Oct 20:23

The first release of Hybrid Heaven: Recompiled — a native port of Hybrid Heaven (Konami, 1999) to Windows, Linux and Android. It isn't an emulator: the N64 code is statically recompiled with N64: Recompiled and renders through RT64, the same stack as Goemon 64: Recompiled.

You need your own ROM

An ordinary Hybrid Heaven (USA) cartridge dump — sha1 16dbc21620b52deab5c5abf8a309ac60adfbee85. Nothing to decompress or convert; pick it on first launch and the app verifies it and keeps its own copy. None of these downloads contain game data.

Downloads

Platform File Needs
Windows HybridHeaven-1.0.0-windows-x64.zip 64-bit Windows, a GPU with Direct3D 12 or Vulkan. Unzip and run HybridHeavenRecompiled.exe.
Linux HybridHeaven-1.0.0-linux-x86_64.tar.gz A Vulkan GPU, SDL2 and GTK 3 (libsdl2-2.0-0, libgtk-3-0). Extract and run ./HybridHeavenRecompiled from inside the folder.
Android HybridHeaven-1.0.0-android-arm64-v8a.apk Android 9+, 64-bit (arm64-v8a), a Vulkan GPU — and a gamepad (a handheld's built-in controls work).

What's in it

  • Widescreen (Settings → Graphics → Aspect Ratio), plus higher internal resolutions, MSAA, V-Sync and framerate options.
  • Analog camera (optional) — free-look with the right stick while you explore, which the game's C-button camera can't do.
  • Autosave (optional, off by default) — through the game's own save routine, every 2 minutes or on L + R + Z. Back up your save before turning it on: it overwrites the slot you last saved to.
  • Saves move between platforms. It's the same file everywhere, and Settings → Saves imports one — no adb or file manager needed on Android. The file is checked before anything is replaced, and the old save is kept as a backup.
  • Keyboard and gamepad on desktop, with rebinding.
  • Android extras: load a different GPU driver on Adreno devices (Settings → GPU Driver), and restart to the title screen without closing the app.

Known limitations

  • Android needs a gamepad — there are no on-screen touch controls yet.
  • Controller Pak images from other emulators (.mpk) can't be imported yet.
  • Linux has had the least testing of the three. Reports are very welcome.
  • Android closes itself a few seconds after starting? That's usually the device's GPU driver: turn off Settings → Graphics → Framebuffer Effects, or load a different driver.

Tested on a Retroid Pocket 5 (Android 13, Snapdragon 865) and on Windows with an RTX 5080 (Direct3D 12 and Vulkan). More fixes are in the README's quick fixes; if you're still stuck, please open an issue with your platform, device and OS version.

Credits

Built on N64: Recompiled, N64ModernRuntime and RT64. The launcher, settings menus and input layer come from Goemon 64: Recompiled; the Android layer from Goemon64Recomp-Android and @linkzenic's Zelda64Recomp-Android. The decompilation it's built from is HybridHeaven-Decomp, whose archive tooling owes a lot to the mnsg decomp.
