openOMSI 0.3.31
Pre-releaseopenOMSI 0.3.31
Beta, for testing. The launcher keeps players on the stable release; this build is for anyone who wants to try what comes next. Report what breaks in an issue, with the version. openOMSI needs an original OMSI 2 installation to run; it contains no game content.
In short
This beta is mostly about smoothness: driving with timetable traffic no longer hitches every few seconds, rain no longer stutters on weak PCs, and the game starts faster after an update on Vulkan. On OpenGL and DirectX 11, street lamps and headlights light their surroundings, and a dedicated graphics card gets its full graphics settings. Maps made with the OMSI 1 editor, such as Great Grundorf 2, now have their whole road network, AI cars stop driving into articulated buses on servers, and the launcher's route map shows the city around the roads. Plus Brazilian Portuguese, safer online play and many smaller fixes.
Performance
- No more short hitch every few seconds with timetable traffic: since 0.2.46 the game froze for 13 to 20 ms about every 6 seconds while it looked up the coupled cars of the coming trains on disk. They are now looked up once; the traffic schedule costs less than in 0.2.30 (#2654, @thibautgnt).
- Rain is steady on weak PCs: the bus windows take turns to repaint their drops instead of all in the same frame, which caused a regular stutter of about 20 ms (#2654).
- Faster first start after an update on Vulkan: the shaders are compiled on several cores; on Windows the map was ready in 12.9 s instead of 22.4 s on a cold start (#2654).
- Scenery scripts run on helper threads again, as in 0.2.34, and AI traffic costs less in the frames that run a traffic step, with identical results (#2654).
- Enhanced without anti-aliasing: PCs no longer pay for the extra depth pass under excavations, which only helps Apple graphics (#2654).
- Dedicated servers use less memory: they no longer keep a copy of every mesh of the map (#2662, @fsalexandre).
Graphics
- OpenGL and DirectX 11: a graphics card of its own keeps the player's MSAA, shadows and texture memory instead of being taken for a small shared chip, and street lamps, headlights and interior lamps light their surroundings as on DirectX 12 (#2654).
- Motion-blur photos: passengers, the driver, the money and the ticket blocks move with the bus instead of being left behind as ghosts (#2652, @isaacsa2).
- Compiled shader data is saved again when it changes, so later starts can reuse it (#2651, @isaacsa2).
Maps
- Maps made with the OMSI 1 editor, such as Great Grundorf 2: the whole road network and all start points are there; before, most roads were missing and there was nothing to start from (#2670, @turbo-devv).
Driving
- Legacy mouse steering: the crosshair, steering and pedals stay aligned with the cursor after mouse steering is switched off and on again (#2094, @FakeShxp3).
Online play
- Dedicated server and LAN host: AI cars see the whole articulated bus of every player and no longer drive into its rear section (#1968, @veryinsanee).
- Safer content from other machines: every file a host sends must be what its name says, and no script can run for ever (#2666, @fsalexandre).
Launcher
- The route map shows the map's water, green areas, rivers, rail and borders under the roads when the map has a package (#2561, @lmonteirotech).
- Light theme: off toggles, key badges and selected buttons are easier to see (#2358, @Equinity).
- The Discord links open the openOMSI server again (#2681).
Languages
- Brazilian Portuguese for 222 texts that had none (#2665, @fsalexandre).
- The end-of-trip notice and the other in-game messages in every language of the game (#2655).
Security
- Proxy logins no longer appear in the logs (#2650, @isaacsa2).
- Dependency updates (rand, sevenz-rust2, unrar-rs) and both dependency audits keep running after a failed check (#2680, @isaacsa2).
Thank you
- @turbo-devv, for bringing the OMSI 1 maps back to life: Great Grundorf 2 players finally get their roads and their 49 start points.
- @fsalexandre, for three careful pull requests split out at review: content checks that make online play safer, Brazilian Portuguese for 222 texts, and a lighter dedicated server.
- @lmonteirotech, for the map packages under the launcher's route map: the Drive page now looks like the real city.
- @veryinsanee, for measuring exactly how far the AI cars drove into articulated buses on servers, and fixing it.
- @FakeShxp3, for chasing the mouse steering offset through every way of switching it off and on.
- @Equinity, for making the launcher's light theme readable.
- @VlastikYoutubeKo, for making a test pass on Czech Windows, so every contributor can run the whole suite whatever their language (#1982).
- @isaacsa2, for the photo, shader cache and proxy fixes, the audit fix, and for reviewing the performance pull request.
And thanks to everyone who tests the betas and reports what breaks: this is how a beta becomes a good stable release.
