openOMSI 0.3.33

Early release, expect bugs. openOMSI needs an original OMSI 2 installation to run; it contains no game content.

In short

Heavy rain no longer holds the frame in the cab, the Video memory setting now bounds everything the game keeps on the graphics card, and a card that runs out of memory no longer loses the whole picture. Dashboard instruments and sign plates stop flickering against the surface they lie on, headlight beams leave from the headlamps, reflections get a strength slider, and the launcher speaks French and offers two smaller sizes.

Performance and graphics memory

  • Heavy rain costs less in the cab: the drops on the windows are painted on helper threads and only the rows that changed are sent to the card. On a Radeon 680M, in a downpour, the panes went from 10-12 ms of every frame to 2-3 ms (#2766, @thibautgnt).
  • Video memory bounds everything on the card: "Texture memory" becomes "Video memory" and now covers all textures, meshes, render targets and the driver's own memory, as the driver counts them on DirectX 12, Vulkan and Metal. Before, the game could use gigabytes more than set, and 8 GB cards paged to system memory. Automatic is nine tenths of the card; 8 and 12 GB can be chosen (#2669, @turbo-devv), and 16 GB for 20-24 GB cards (#2766).
  • Enhanced+ draws 8x MSAA at 4x: the traced passes cost half as much and their targets take half the memory, for little visible difference; OMSI_FULL_GPU=1 keeps 8x (#2766).
  • Render targets of a size not drawn for 5 s are freed, so a large photo no longer leaves them on the card (#2766).
  • A card out of memory no longer loses the whole picture: meshes go into smaller buffers, or only those that cannot be made are left out, instead of the main pass, shadows and picture being thrown away every frame (#2764, @thibautgnt).

Graphics

  • No more flicker between surfaces lying on each other: instruments printed on a dashboard, a plate on a pole or a timetable on a stop show steadily, the later one on top as in OMSI 2 (#2603, @turbo-devv).
  • Headlight beams start at the bus's own headlamps, not under the bumper or at the fog lamps (Van Hool AG280, MB O305, MAN SD200, Enviro400 MMC...) (#2756, @thibautgnt).
  • Reflection maps get a 0-100 % strength slider (paint, chrome, glass) in the game, the launcher and the Apple app; changes show at once (#2764).

Launcher

  • Two smaller sizes, Very small and Smallest, so more of each page fits on big screens (#2758, @ThiBot77).

Languages

Thank you

  • @turbo-devv, for making the Video memory setting mean what it says and for ending the z-fighting on dashboards and signs.
  • @ThiBot77, for the French launcher and the smaller sizes: two contributions in one beta.
