cant click on a hyperlink generated by codex. copy pasting it in a browser works, but is not user friendly

trying to get a hyperlink to any linear issue (or the like) from codex.

What is the expected behavior?

clicking on a link should directly open a browser window (or an app directly if deeplinks are used)

Windows Codex Deeplink Notes

• codex://settings works in the Codex docs and sometimes from the shell.
• codex://threads/<thread-id> only worked reliably here when launched through the installed Codex.exe directly.
• The working command shape is:

Start-Process -FilePath "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\OpenAI.Codex_26.313.5234.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0\app\Codex.exe" -ArgumentList "codex://threads/<uuid>"

Root cause

• The official docs say Codex registers the codex:// URL scheme and supports:
  • codex://settings
  • codex://skills
  • codex://automations
  • codex://threads/<thread-id>
  • codex://new
• On this Windows machine, the installed package manifest did not expose a protocol registration entry for codex.
• Because of that, raw Start-Process "codex://threads/..." could trigger the Windows "Get an app to open this 'codex' link" dialog.
• Launching Codex.exe directly with the deeplink argument bypasses that OS-level protocol lookup.

Session id rule

• Do not use the full rollout filename stem as the thread id.
• This is wrong:

codex://threads/2026-03-25T22-46-16-019d25ff-3701-75d1-b331-160b90f8a456

• Use the UUID stored in session_meta.payload.id.

• For the checked session file:

  • Session file:
