For developers looking to contribute to OpenScholar, we encourage you to use the same PHP Zend Studio configuration used by the development team:

Zend Studio version 8.0
Use our Drupal-compliant PHP formatter settings
Go to Zend Studio > Preferences > PHP > Editor > Save Actions and select "Remove trailing whitespace: from all lines"
