Troubleshooting

Collect first: dmesg, the streamer log (OpenIMP prints to stderr, optionally to syslog with OPENIMP_LOG_SYSLOG=1), cat /proc/meminfo, lsmod.

Symptom / log line Meaning What to do
Helix run failed errno=5 / vpu error status=100 (T23) The Helix encoder reported an error for one picture. Earlier builds lost a few pictures per hour; that cause (a residual Helix interrupt, status 0x100 after a finished job, treated as an error by the bounded-wait kernel patch) is fixed in the kernel (patch in the thingino aperto VPU series, merged upstream). A rare single error (errno 5) is still open: one frame is lost, the stream continues. Harmless if rare. After 3 consecutive failed pictures (T20/T21/T30 path) the encoder is re-created; after 2 fruitless re-creates the channel stops. Report frequency and stream set.
rmem peak ... lines Reserved video memory usage (peak vs total). Information. See Memory.
raise rmem by at least M KB (suggest rmem=<n>M) Allocation failed, rmem too small. Raise rmem or reduce streams.
set ispmem >= N KB Driver switched temper/WDR off for lack of ispmem. Raise ispmem or accept.
no N KiB MMAP frame pool ... USERPTR only Optional V4L2 MMAP pool could not be allocated. Normal with OpenIMP. The pool is off by default (isp_mmap_pool_kb=0) since 2026-10-04, so the line only appears if a non-zero pool was set explicitly.
isp-guard: ... open ISP stack not loaded this boot The boot guard suppressed the ISP and sensor modules and the streamer. Reason follows (isp_open=off/manual, guard tripped, previous boot did not stay up 300 s). S10isp-guard status, find the crash cause, then S10isp-guard clear and reboot. See Installing and Switching.
isp-guard: stable after Ns, pending mark cleared Normal. -
The camera boot-loops with the open stack Driver or sensor module crashes early. Break the loop with isp_open=manual/off from U-Boot, read dmesg.
U-Boot environment Bad CRC on T41 The environment is stored with a 64 KiB size but tools used 32 KiB (or the reverse), so U-Boot ignores the stored environment and falls back to defaults (for example rmem=30M). Make /etc/fw_env.config use 64 KiB for the T41 environment. A guarded fw_setenv refuses to write when the CRC is bad. Do not write over a bad environment. The 64 KiB fw_env.config and the CRC guard (pull request 1738) were not merged upstream (closed), so they are not in thingino aperto; apply the same change in your own tree. The optional boot guard package is merged in aperto (pull request 1749).
OOM kill or watchdog reset with several streams rmem plus ispmem leave too little for Linux. Reduce rmem to the measured peak plus headroom; fewer parallel streams.
insmod of the ISP module oopses after a previous rmmod A leftover from an older module (T41 fs_remove bug, fixed). Boot without the old module (isp_open=manual), load the fixed build once.
rmmod of the sensor module is refused while streaming Intended: the sensor module is pinned while the ISP is open. Stop the streamer first.
AddSensor returns EBUSY after an OOM kill (T41) The sensor stays registered until reboot (vendor behaviour). Reboot. A driver fix was not yet usable at the time of writing.
CreateChn(PT_H265) returns -1 SoC has no HEVC hardware. Use H.264.
IVS channel create returns EBUSY Another consumer owns the channel. Do not retry blindly.
Kernel WARN Data will not fit into plane (T10) Seen in the frame-source tick, no oops. Report; not fatal.
A QBUF is rejected Buffer outside the rmem window (qbuf_guard). Check the rmem command line; qbuf_guard=0 only as a debug step.
Image has a colour cast after stream restart (T23, older builds) White balance reset on every stream start. Fixed in current builds; update.

Telling kernel from userspace problems

Build once with BR2_PACKAGE_THINGINO_ISP_OPEN_VENDOR_LIBIMP=y (open driver, vendor libimp). If the problem stays, it is in the driver; if it disappears, look at OpenIMP. The reverse test is the vendor stack image.

Reporting a problem

Open an issue at https://github.com/opensensor/openimp/issues (userspace, encoder, integration) or https://github.com/opensensor/open-tx-isp/issues (kernel driver, ISP, memory); when unsure, use openimp. Provide: SoC and sensor, image revisions of open-tx-isp, OpenIMP and timps, dmesg, streamer log, stream set (resolutions, codecs), rmem/ispmem values and the rmem peak line. Do not post addresses, credentials or location names.
