Question about the profile: 1080p Quality HDR

From the wizard, it seems 1080p Quality HDR is the only profile that supports HDR for 1080p. Not even Lossless supports HDR. The wizard clearly says that it needs a 265 codec:

But then, while checking the scoring for this profile I notice the following:

Both h265 and x265 are banned with -999999 score. I am not really sure how this works and would like to understand.

Ideally I would prefer to have Balanced or Efficient focus with HDR, but I'm fine with Quality. Just not sure I understand why it then bans 265 codecs

Hi there, {h,x}265 is not actually outright banned- only at unwanted resolutions. See the conditions for each of those custom formats:

x265 HDR encodes are still allowed and preferred, you can test this in an interactive search.

As for this, the two aren't mutually exclusive. You typically never see lossless audio in any sort of encode these days (minus the occasional 4k)- its usually only kept for remuxes.

Yeah, it is unwanted for 1080p for some reason, it is only wanted at 4k apparently. Considering that the image of the wizard I pasted is for 1080p with HDR, why would it ban 265 for 108'p HDR?

I tested this with the following file for example:

Here you can see it is HDR10, but h265, thus getting -718189 score. The wizard says H264 is limited to SDR which I don't think is true. you can have HDR in H264.

With regards to "lossless", this is not about audio. The wizard clearly says "How video data is stored. Lossless preserves all data for perfect quality at the cost of large files. Compressed uses smart encoding to reduce file size with minimal quality loss."

So why is lossless video data not supporting HDR? that is 1080p Remux profile.

I think the Wizard needs to be clearer and redesigned to avoid misunderstandings. https://dictionarry.dev/quality-profile/1080p-remux profile rejects {x,h}265 but has HDR with 1000 score.

Even the description of 1080p Quality HDR profile mentions x265 and yet it has negative score

None of our profiles are for anime. 264 cannot contain hdr. You need to do alot more research before asking these types of questions

I know they are not for anime, that is not the issue. It happens for other non-anime series as well. All my series are in 1080p and all of them have negative scores if the codec of the file is {x,h}265. The example I showed was the first one I found that had HDR with x265 and it has negative score. That means that this "HDR" profile would have preferred a non-HDR 264 codec file simply because 264 does not have a negative score and 265 does.

As per the research. I am definitely not an expert, but I did search and I can see that what makes HDR HDR is not the codec or the bit depth, but if it has a transformation function. and h264 supports it. This is what I found. If what I found is incorrect, please kindly point me in the right direction:

But again, even if h264 cannot have HDR (which it should), why is the 1080p Quality HDR profile giving negative score to {x,h}265 codecs if they are ones that mainly support HDR?

Can the question be reopened please? and also, the answer be unmarked as answer, as that was not the question. I never asked if 264 could have HDR in my original question, that was just a comment and is besides the point. I also never said anything about this being anime specific. so the answer is not answering the original question at all.

Thanks again for your time and the great piece of software you have created. It really is a great idea and I just need to get the profiles configured correctly to be able to really commit to it.

The quality hdr profile only raises high quality 265 hdr downscaled from 4k. Not all 265 with hdr will apply.

That makes sense.

From what I gather, a file that is:

• Res: 1080p
• Codec: x265
• Source: UHD Bluray
• HDR format

Will get: 420000(UHD storage) + 280000(1080p bluray source) - 400000 (x265 bluray) + 1000(HDR) = 301000

Meanwhile a file that is:

• Res: 1080p
• Codec: h264
• Source: WEB-DL
• Non HDR

Will get: 380000 (WEB-DL source)

No other extra points. which means h264 will be preferred to the UHD bluray x265. Is this intended? Maybe the idea is to have 264 WEB-DL on top, then 265 HDR, then WEB-Rip? Not really sure if that was the goal of this profile. I also might just missing another custom format that changes the score in Bluray's favor.
