I would like to request that Homebrew explicitly support major versioned formulas for standalone clang-format (e.g., clang-format@22, clang-format@23), mirroring how runtimes like Python, Node, and LLVM are managed.

Why this is necessary

Unlike standard CLI utilities where the "latest is best", clang-format behaves much more like a strict compiler version. Code formatting rules and AST parsing change significantly between major LLVM releases.

When a team commits to an enterprise codebase, they must pin a specific clang-format version across hundreds of developers to prevent cascading git-diff noise and broken CI pipelines.

Currently, when a developer runs a routine brew upgrade, Homebrew forces them onto the latest clang-format major release. Because Homebrew doesn't maintain the immediate prior versioned formula, developers are forced to look for fragile workarounds (like installing via PyPI wheels or pinning system packages globally), which breaks the seamless macOS developer workflow that Homebrew provides.

Suggested Implementation

Maintain standalone versioned formulas for the last 2-3 major releases of clang-format (e.g., clang-format@22) to provide the engineering community with the version stability required for professional software development.
