Github Pages from private repo not working anymore (despite Pro account)

I am serving a Github Pages site from a private repository to a custom domain. This used to work fine but all of a sudden I am now getting a 404 page that "There isn't a GitHub Pages site here." when visiting the domain.

The settings page of the repo shows the following error message. I do have Github Pro, which afaik should be enough for publish pages from private repos. Does anyone know why all of the sudden this isn't working anymore and how I can fix this?

It looks like you're having trouble with GitHub Pages on a private repository, even though you have a GitHub Pro account, which should allow you to publish Pages from a private repo. Consider checking on the following things:

1. Check GitHub Pages Settings

   • Go to your repository’s Settings > GitHub Pages section.
   • Make sure the Source is set to the correct branch where your Pages files are (usually main or gh-pages).
   • Double-check that your custom domain is set correctly.

2. Check Your Repo’s Status

   • Make sure the repo isn’t in a broken state (e.g., unmerged pull requests or failing builds).
   • If you renamed the repo recently, make sure your custom domain is still pointing to the correct URL.

3. Private Repo Publishing

   • With GitHub Pro, you should still be able to publish from a private repo, but make sure the GitHub Pages feature is still enabled and there are no issues with limits or permissions.

4. Custom Domain Setup

   • Double-check your custom domain DNS settings. Make sure the CNAME record points to yourusername.github.io.
   • If you have HTTPS enforced, try turning it off and on again after checking the DNS.

5. Check Permissions

   • Since your repo is private, make sure you're properly authenticated and have permission to access the site.

6. Clear Cache

   • Your browser might be showing an old version of the page. Try clearing your cache or opening the site in Incognito mode to see if that fixes it.

Thanks. Those seem good steps to investigate why I get a 404 page. In my case, though, I already do know that the problem is that Github has shut my site down (see the screenshot in the original post). My issue is that I don't understand why they have shut it down and what to do about it. If I understand your suggestions correctly, they wouldn't help with that?

As this is an account related issue, I recommend you to contact support by opening a ticket here, select "Billing, payments, or receipts" and explain your problem.

Update: The support team was able to restore access. They didn't say why it was removed in the first place.

Anyhow, this resolved it. Though, unfortunately, the downtime of 2+ weeks means that my site completely disappeared from google :/
