Hello everyone!

I'm creating my first personal website using just HTML and CSS. I’ve written the code on my mobile using Acode Editor and I’m trying to deploy it using GitHub Pages.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:

• Created a new repository named rudushi-site
• Uploaded index.html to the root
• Went to Settings → Pages → Set source to main branch

However, my site is not showing up yet. Am I missing any steps?
Also, any tips on improving mobile workflow or adding CSS animation would be appreciated.

How to deploy your HTML website using GitHub Pages

1. Create a GitHub repository

   • Go to GitHub and create a new repository (public or private).
   • Name it anything you like.

2. Add your website files

   • Upload your HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other website files to the repository.
   • Make sure your main HTML file is named index.html.

3. Push your code to GitHub

   • If working locally, commit and push your files to the repository’s default branch (main or master).

4. Enable GitHub Pages

   • Go to your repository on GitHub.
   • Click on the Settings tab.
   • Scroll down to the Pages section.
   • Under Source, select the branch you want to serve your site from (main or master).
   • Select the folder to serve from, usually /root (or /docs if your site files are in a docs folder).
   • Click Save.
   • Wait a few minutes for GitHub to build and deploy your site.

   

5. Access your website

   • GitHub will build and deploy your site.
   • After a few minutes, your site will be available at:
     • https://<your-username>.github.io/<repository-name>/ (for project pages) or
     • https://<your-username>.github.io/ (if your repo is named <your-username>.github.io).

6. Important: Ensure index.html exists
   It appears none of your repositories currently have an index.html file. GitHub Pages requires this file as the entry point for your website. Without it, the site will not display correctly or may show a 404 error.

   To fix this:

   • Add an index.html file to the root or the selected folder of your repo.
   • Commit and push the changes.
   • Wait a few minutes for the site to update.

   

7. Optional: Use a custom domain

   • You can configure a custom domain in the GitHub Pages settings if you have one.

This worked for me, the issues I had was the name was not index.

Thanks, this is a clear checklist. The index.html point is probably the key issue here.

I’d also add one small troubleshooting step: after enabling GitHub Pages, check the Actions tab or the Pages deployment status. Sometimes the files are correct, but the site is still building or the selected branch/folder does not match where index.html was uploaded.

Also, for beginners creating the page with ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, I think it helps to preview the HTML locally first before pushing it to GitHub Pages. That way you can catch simple layout or mobile issues before deploying.

I built a small Chrome extension called HTML Deployer for this AI HTML workflow, mostly to preview and package the generated HTML faster. But for GitHub Pages itself, your checklist above is exactly the right path: index.html in the selected folder, correct branch, then wait for Pages to deploy.

You’re very close. For GitHub Pages, I would check these things first:

1. Make sure the file is named exactly index.html, all lowercase.
2. Make sure index.html is in the root of the selected branch, not inside another folder.
3. In Settings → Pages, choose Deploy from a branch, then select main and /root.
4. Wait a few minutes, then check the Actions tab to see if the Pages build failed.
5. Your URL should usually look like:
   https://your-username.github.io/rudushi-site/

For a mobile workflow, I’d keep the first version simple: index.html, style.css, and maybe one small script.js file. After the page works, add animations with basic CSS transitions or @Keyframes.

Small side note: if you often generate HTML with ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and just want to preview or publish it faster, I built a Chrome extension called HTML Deployer for that workflow. But for learning GitHub Pages, the steps above are the important part.

I ran into the same issue when I first deployed my ( homecleaningservicesinrochesterny ) HTML site. In my case, waiting a few minutes, making sure index.html was in the repository root, and confirming the Pages source was set to the main branch fixed it. If it still doesn't appear, try refreshing after a new commit it worked for me.
