When Will GitHub Copilot Subscriptions Return? #197066

I do not think there is a public return date yet. The clearest official wording I can find is still that new sign-ups for Copilot Pro, Copilot Pro+, and student plans are “temporarily paused” starting April 20, 2026. The docs and changelog explain the pause, but they do not publish a concrete reopening date. Official references:
So the honest answer is: there is no exact date available from public docs right now. I would watch the Copilot changelog and the Copilot Community category rather than relying on guesses from users. If you already had a paid plan and lost access due to billing/renewal, that is probably a Support case. If you are trying to newly subscribe, it currently appears blocked by the plan pause. |

Literally same thing happened to me. very upset because i use it for work and was a paying customer. Really wish they could have provided notice and not just pull the rug from existing users such as myself. Felt like a giant slap in the face after paying for their services. I sent them an email over a month ago requesting either some kind of answer or a refund and never received a response... |

@slveer because they changed their cost model from requests to token based. People will be paying bare API rates which is astronomically more expensive than the previous cost. |

They LIED. They stated very plainly on the website that the subscriptions would be available again on June 1, 2026. |

Hello :) The suspension of individual Copilot tiers was a decision made by Microsoft, and they have not yet made a concrete return date public. To get the most direct updates or to voice your feedback where it can impact policy, I highly recommend checking the official Microsoft 365 Blog or contacting Microsoft Support directly to get the answer. |

I've moved from Copilot Pro to Continue.dev with the Claude Sonnet 4.6 model, and it has been working very well for me in VS Code. |

I moved on to OpenRouter. So many more models to choose from! |

Hmm... My annual submission just got cancelled, and now I have no way to upgrade to Copilot Pro. Looks like I have to look for alternatives... |

I'm in the exact same situation. I got verified through GitHub Student Developer Pack, and my Education benefits page clearly shows my status is active — yet my Copilot plan is still stuck on Free with no upgrade option in sight. Not even a button. Just a vague message saying "plan upgrades are temporarily unavailable." |

I have the same issue, got aproved April 30 and it still shows copilot free, I tried opening a ticket and got the "new sigups are currently paused while we work to bla bla bla" message, so, here we are, past June 1 and it still hasn't changed... |

I have upgraded from old yearly pro plan to new monthly pro plus plan, but no refund credit is saw in UI. |

I am facing the exact same issue, and it is incredibly frustrating. My Copilot Pro subscription was canceled and refunded, and now my daily work as a developer is completely blocked due to this sudden pause on new sign-ups. I rely heavily on AI assistance for my daily development workflow. The current workarounds and other available alternatives are just not matching the experience, with the possible exception of Claude Code. Could the GitHub team please provide a clear timeline on when the Copilot Pro subscriptions will reopen? If this suspension is going to take a long time, I need to know now so I can just go ahead and pay for a Claude Code subscription instead to get my work moving again. We really need transparency on this issue. |

i tried claude and it runs out so fast! Now i use codex and honestly its as good if not better than copilot. just a tad bit less credits. However I was in the same boat as you and I had to make the switch to claude and codex out of desperation. My journey started with chatgpt i guess it will end with it |

I found a a way to circumvent it, if you purchase the subscription of Claude API developer platform and generate the API key then paste that in the Github copilot's option to add model then it works. |

yes, it works, but money burns like anything, I did 5$ recharge twice but few queries and few code completions using Sonnet 4.6 in GitHub copilot and its gone. Asking to recharge again. Therefore, technically this solution works but billing model is totally different and much more expensive. |

No, you're wrong. If you go to the sign up page it still clearly says that Microsoft is continuing to be a horrible company and not allow signups. |

I am pushed out of using Copilot because after a transient card billing issue, (now ive paid the full bill..) which led my account to be demoted to Copilot Free, i cant upgrade back to Copilot Pro+ or any other plan! The lockout persists, you are acting on outdated information. How horrible. Are you going to do anything about it, or do you want to shed Pro+ users like me to the competition? @github Community Admin |

thats isn't important anymore i wanted it for oups but after you delete it i can use all the models that you offer for free in the model site i don't know how you call it (pro) when the most of the open models are free i can't see any pro thing |

I had 4 Copilot Business seats that I was paying for and that just disappeared a few days ago without a trace. |

I canceled my annual plan last month, and because of that I still can’t resubscribe to the Copilot Pro plan. I understand that the new usage-based billing model has been very controversial, and honestly it sounds pretty rough. But in my case, I just want to try the GitHub Copilot App. It is frustrating that users who previously had a paid subscription cannot get back onto Pro after canceling or losing access during this pause. I hope GitHub can either reopen individual subscriptions soon, or at least provide a way for former paid users to resubscribe. |

yeah, and weirdest of all, the "GitHub Community Admin" is implying that the subscriptions aren't paused, but they really are. It just says New plan sign-ups are temporarily paused as we ensure a high-quality experience. We appreciate your patience. at present. It says that at https://github.com/features/copilot/plans. Similarly, i lost access due to a transient billing issue, and now im locked out of my work as i cant resubscribe (After fixing that payment issue and paying). I posted elsewhere in this discussion about my case. It's odd that they are still into purging subscription users and minimalizing their paid customers, even after their major billing overhaul.. that was an optimization from a business perspective (Microsoft), right? This seems to be one of the cases where they are doing some awful business practises and then they want us to be silent and just go away (they imply it's not a problem once, and leave it at that). Question is: does Microsoft really want to destroy their own business position within the AI provider economy, or is it lower-level mismanagement that we're seeing? Who'se heads would roll if this aggressive customer minimalization/"just make them all leave" policy ends up removing GitHub Copilot from the equation and let the competition score a definitive win? In corporate, things like this are hardly ever a mistake or oversight. It's deliberate. We should talk with our wallets.. if they do this now, and not solve it swiftly, we won't return, not now (still impossible.. plans lockout) NOR in the future (This is where they are incurring the real damage from such moves), because they have demonstrated to be a too unreliable, unpredictable company to do business with; you never know when they will lock you out from working without reasonable timeline/clarification, let alone advance notice. |

I completely agree with your assessment; the Copilot team is currently in a state of total neglect—tickets and bugs go unaddressed. All signs point to a plan to quietly exit the AI market while subtly nudging users to drift away unnoticed. They are well aware that their current pricing policy lacks any market competitiveness. Their actions suggest they have lost the race in this AI wave and are seeking a graceful exit, ultimately choosing to sacrifice their users to save themselves. It is a sad state of affairs for a company that was once so great... |
@cooperong Makes sense. If they really want to ezit the market for now, then expect to see artificially created "billing issues" that will make their rounds to end the remaining subscription user's plans in waves, with obviously no way to re-subscribe (Stone wall), until everyone is purged out one way or another. Most likely they'll spare enterprise users because that's where the real money is at for Microsoft (They already don't care about us anymore). Maybe the purge-and-lockdown would target just individuals. We've seen that sort of thing before; unworkable rate limiting for everyone but Copilot Enterprise users. It's some really calculated, scummy business practices. |

I have an annual Copilot subscription valid until November 2027, but it has stopped working. Even when I switch the model to the free version, I get zero response. I do not think this is a fair or professional approach. |

i think gihub shoudl answer us by giving some date expected at least , what the purpose of big gaint company to hold every one using it , if you guys are temp suspedning at least for total new you could have done , but those who were using and beacuse some bank issues why do u have to treat us like new login, if you have issue with anthnroptic , you could allow other model to use and let the suspension be lifted is it , |

Anyway, I basically have a contract from November 2025 to November 2026 and why do I now have a status with pending everywhere? I'm getting an error in my copilot and I'm in a deadlock. I'll definitely leave copilot but I'll just give a one-word answer and not convert my money into tokens. I can go straight to Las Vegas to buy chips/tokens and play there :) |

This a elementary mistake that revokes all the basic principles of trust... even a kid can understand it... We work hard to get the trust of our clients... How can we transmit this trust forward to them about something that suddenly stops to work and we are kick out of our licenses... Is this the edge of an iceberg how things are going in Copilot world? |

We all wanted to give Microsoft (GitHub Copilot) the benefit of doubt, everyone talking here is clearly willing to resubscribe and use it as a paying customer again. But im pretty sure it becomes clear that we simply cannot trust or rely on this company with our work-critical business. They can pull the rug whenever they so wish, and proceed to ignore everyone that has their daily work disrupted. They don't care about individual devs, they are only sliming up to corporate entities. While it's quite short-sighted for MS to put all their eggs into one basket, we have no choice but to let them make their mistakes and just take our business elsewhere.. everyone who posted has likely found an alternative by now. By their actions, they don't want us as customers anymore, and they want to exit the AI market for individual consumers. They want to do this quietly, and they cannot care about the paying customer's interest. Stick your head into the sand Microsoft, and hope it all just goes away (including your former customers). But you'll have eternal reputation damage which will affect many other products aimed at consumers, especially devs, now and in the future. Not to mention the power of word and that individual devs also work somewhere, including in the corporate realm that you are targeting now. You really don't have any decency or a clue on the domino effect on your reputation, Microsoft. |

For now, I'm using the Deepseek extension in VS Code. With v4 Flash and v4 Pro, I'm getting decent results, and it's inexpensive. I'm also considering OpenRouter. Currently, I design user stories with ChatGPT, use Deepseek v4 Pro to create very detailed implementation plans for those user stories, and then use v4 Flash for implementation and refactoring. |

I don't want to rely entirely on AI. I worked as a developer and solution architect for years. And I think that you have to keep studying. So the design is nice to generate, but we know that it needs to be reviewed and directed, etc. Let the code be generated when I need components, etc. But not always the project is complex. I have customers and no specific tools are made, I migrate critical data, and many tasks don't fit together, so I'm looking for a solution and it's better to use experience here. Use AI on scripts and configs etc.. |

Hello,
I am writing out of frustration with the sudden halt of individual Copilot subscriptions on April 20, 2026, with zero advance notice.
You called this a "temporary" restructuring, yet over a month later there is still no official return date. Leaving us with only vague promises and no timeline is unacceptable.
So I ask plainly and indignantly: When exactly will Copilot Pro, Pro+, and student subscriptions become available again? We need a concrete date, not more ambiguity.
