Hi everyone,

hello I am trying to apply for an education subscription. my application meets all the requirements. I am quite sure the issue my application is denied is due to my inability to get a clear photo. I only see an option to take a photo so I'm using my phone, which has a great camera and even setting it up on a tripod the resulting photos are always blurry. I don't know how to resolve this. Is there any way to just upload a photo instead of taking one In the browser?

The verification form is designed to only accept a live camera capture (not a file upload) as an anti-fraud measure, so there's no built-in "upload from gallery" option. But a few things worth trying:

1. Try a different device/browser combo — the in-browser camera capture is known to compress and sometimes blur images depending on the browser's camera API. Try Chrome on desktop if you're on mobile (or vice versa), since capture quality varies noticeably between them.
2. Improve lighting, not just stability — a tripod fixes shake, but blur can also come from the browser struggling to autofocus in low light and compensating with a slower shutter. Try bright, even lighting (natural daylight near a window works well) rather than just a stable camera.
3. Move the document further from the camera, then let the crop tool zoom — getting too close can push the phone camera's autofocus to hunt/fail. Hold it at a slightly further distance so the camera can focus properly, then use the form's own cropping step to zoom in.
4. Clean the camera lens — obvious, but a smudge causes exactly this kind of soft, hazy blur that's easy to miss when checking the preview quickly.

If you try all of this and it's still consistently blurry regardless of setup, that suggests a bug in the capture tool itself — open a ticket at support.github.com under "GitHub Education," describe that the in-browser camera capture is producing blurry images across multiple attempts/devices, and ask if there's a manual document upload alternative for your case.

Hi! Unfortunately, as far as I know, the verification flow only supports taking a live photo through your device's camera and doesn't currently provide an option to upload an existing image.

If your photos are consistently blurry, you could try:

• Cleaning the camera lens before taking the photo.
• Making sure you're in a well-lit area (natural daylight works best).
• Holding the ID steady or placing it on a flat surface instead of holding it in your hand.
• Trying a different device or browser if possible, as camera quality can vary depending on browser permissions and processing.
• Ensuring the browser has permission to use the highest camera resolution.

If you've already tried these steps and the issue persists, I'd recommend contacting support and explaining that the live capture is consistently producing blurry images despite using a high-quality camera. They may be able to suggest an alternative verification method or investigate whether there's an issue with the capture process.

I ran into similar camera issues before. I'd try a different browser or another device first, as that can sometimes help with focus. If the verification page only shows the camera option, your best bet is to contact GitHub Support and explain that the browser camera is producing blurry photos despite using a good phone camera. most of the rejections said 1) first and last name don't match the document in the photo.. yet they do. I checked dozens of times. my name is a simple first and last name and it's types exactly the same way.. same case, no characters other than letters.. no spaces or hyphens.. it's like both names are identical literal strings in python (the only reason I assume it's saying this is because of the blurry images ) 2) keeps telling me my profile and username must match the supporting documents..which, as stated above they are the exact same strings so guessing the bot is simply struggling to pull text from the poor quality image despite my best efforts I tried taking photos from the front and back camera of my phone, and my laptop camera. my printer is broke so I am forced to take photos of a screen..if all else fails I'll try going to the library to print what I need but the blurriness may still be an issue. on my screen I turned the brightness now , rotated the page to its side to fill up the 16 inch screen and took many many photos in a variety of lighting environment. finally I tried to take a photo on my android tablet instead of my laptop because it had a screen protector on it that is matte. it's kind of frosted and made to have no glare and feel like writing in a piece of paper. the images I got were still blurry but the best one I submitted and I believe the bot finally read it correctly.. maddeningly though I was still rejected. the reasons now 1) account was made recently (I made it a few days ago and tried to do this application a few hours later, I started school recently and just found out about this site and the student benefits as a beginning computer science student) 2) said someone like you seem to be having trouble validating your documents, try again in a few days (this is very vague and after trying this BS for literally 4 hours this almost sent me into a rage.. like I finally got a good enough photo after like a hundred tries and then there's STILL A PROBLEM!!!. so how many days is "a few days" and if I have another rejection will the same thing happen after spending hours trying to get a legible photo?? I tried opening a ticket in support but each reason I click on it tells me to make a post in the forum and when I get to write a ticket it just won't let me type at all.. so idk how to even open a ticket as every option under the education problem doesnt let me enter any text at all lol. this is beyond frustrating. I have 2 kids and barely enough time for school as it is.. I can't waste anymore hours on this. I have access to and tried submitting almost literally every documentation form accepted and still it's impossible this seems to be a very common issue and I don't know why students have been reporting issues with the camera for a long time and it's still not fixed? there needs to be an option in the browser camera to tap to focus or have it open up our phones camera app to take the photo ! I have a Samsung Galaxy 25 ultra with an amazing overpowered camera yet can't seen to take a simple photo that's legible.. this is a big problem that needs to be addressed. I understand why we can't upload photos , however being forced to take photos ...it needs to be a process that doesn't make me want to hurl my laptop and phone out of a second story window. please, can this be fixed? like I am so beyond annoyed I don't even have the motivation to try this further if I get one more rejection

Hi! I don't think there's currently an option to upload an existing photo during the verification step—the system typically requires taking the photo directly through the browser for security reasons.

A few things you could try:

Make sure you're using the rear camera instead of the front camera, since it's usually much sharper.
Clean the camera lens and use bright, even lighting (avoid glare or shadows on the document).
Try a different browser (Chrome, Safari, or Edge) or even a different device, as some browsers don't access the camera at full resolution.
If you're using a laptop browser that's connected to your phone camera, try opening the verification link directly on your phone instead.
Make sure the browser has permission to use your camera and isn't being limited by any privacy settings.

If the photos are still consistently blurry, it may be worth contacting GitHub Education Support and explaining that the browser camera isn't producing a usable image despite trying multiple devices and browsers. They may be able to suggest an alternative or investigate whether there's an issue with the verification flow.
