Unable to apply even when attaching physical student ID

School Email/Domain Issues

Hi everyone,

I am attempting to apply for the Student Developer Pack, however I am met with an error, even after attaching my physical (and dated) student ID. We require applications to use a school-issued email address to apply.

I have looked in other discussions, however none of them seem to help in my issue. I am using my personal email address (@gmail.com), which in other discussions said was allowed. I have also looked in the FAQ, that says "you will need to provide accepted proof of current enrollment.", which I have. It does not notify me about a required domain.

This looks like a validation-flow issue rather than a problem with the uploaded proof itself. GitHub’s documentation says that if a school does not provide academic email addresses, applicants can submit official documentation such as a school webpage or a letter on school letterhead and then reapply. Accepted proof can also include a school ID with a current enrollment date, class schedule, transcript, or enrollment verification letter.

A better flow would be to allow document-based verification when no institutional email is available, instead of blocking the application at the email step. If the school does issue academic emails, the email should be added and verified on the GitHub account before applying.

If this behavior is not intentional, it seems worth investigating because it may be preventing eligible students from completing verification

This issue is still persistent, as far as I know others are doing it fine without school emails

You can reach out to GitHub Education Support regarding this issue. Furthermore, as stated in Apply to GitHub Education as a student, it's aways good to remember that you must be:

[...] enrolled in a degree- or diploma-granting program, such as a high school, college, university, or homeschool.

Another cause would be that your institution is requiring academic e-mails to join the GitHub Education's Student Developer Pack, as said in Student Developer Pack Application + Copilot Student FAQs 🎒✨ (Updated) #111352

Some schools may require students to be verified by an already confirmed domain distributed by the school. If you are attending one of the schools that request specific verified academic emails and believe the school's details are incorrect please raise a ticket with Education support using the dropdown "My selected school has incorrect or incomplete information e.g. domains or campus location".

With my own experience, I can say the process is automated, so your best solution would be to either contact your institution's GitHub/IT team/maintainer or open a ticket at GitHub Education Support.

Hi, thanks for the response!

Education support refuses to help
me, as it wont let me type in once I select the category. I've added my school email and will try again soon with that. However, my HS isn't marked as requiring student emails.

Do you mean once you select the category My selected school has incorrect or incomplete information e.g. domains or campus location?

I was able to apply, thankfully! However, GitHub incorrectly recognizes my high school as the district itself, which gives the same error. I was able to fix this by manually selecting the school. I will also open a support ticket.
