Re-verification/Repeat Application

Hi everyone,

I initially applied for GitHub Education, but my application was rejected because some of my information was incomplete. I was then asked to reapply after providing some additional information.

I completed everything that was requested and filled out all the required information. However, when I tried to reapply, I received the following error:

There was an error creating the discount request. Errors: Discount request could not be created. Discount request errors: You have an outstanding discount request for @USERNAME. We will get back to you soon.

I searched through other threads and found that some people recommended waiting a few days, logging out of GitHub, clearing cookies/cache, using a different browser, or even trying from a different network such as 4G. Unfortunately, none of these solutions worked for me.

I also waited 5 days before trying to reapply again, but I am still getting the exact same error.

My application currently shows that it was submitted 7 days ago and was rejected on August 19. Since the previous application is already marked as rejected, I don't understand why the system still considers me to have an outstanding discount request.

Has anyone experienced the same issue or knows how to get the previous request cleared so I can submit a new application?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello! Your previous application appears to be active on the back end, although it appears to be rejected.

Given that you've already been waiting for some time and have done browser and cache clearing and other network testing, I doubt it will make any difference. This seems to need to be resolved from the GitHub side.

I would suggest reaching out to GitHub support and telling them that your previous application was rejected on the 19th of August, but you still see the message "You have an outstanding discount request" when you try to apply again. Include a screenshot of the message along with your GitHub account name so they can find the request.

Hopefully, they'll be able to remove the old request and allow you to submit another one. Good luck!

Thanks for getting back to me! Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to contact GitHub Support directly. Their support flow now says, "Individual manual reviews and status updates are no longer provided" and I can’t find any other way to reach someone who can actually look into the issue.

Most of the options in the support form just end up telling me to "open a thread in the Community" which unfortunately doesn’t seem very useful for resolving an application that is stuck on GitHub’s side.

So, apparently, a billion-dollar company can have a system that gets stuck, but doesn’t have a working support channel to fix it. 😅

I’ll keep looking for a way to contact someone at GitHub, but at this point I’m not sure what other option I have. Thanks again for your help and suggestion!

Ah I see. That screenshot makes the situation a lot clearer. I suggested that you contact Support because I thought there was still a way to report application issues but it looks like that option is gone for good. 😅

The frustrating part is that this really feels like something that GitHub needs to fix. The current support flow just sends you back to the Community, which feels like you are just going in circles. 🔄

At this point I think the best thing is to keep this discussion updated. We can hope that someone from the GitHub Education team sees this and can look into why that stuck request's not moving from their side.

I am sorry that I could not give you a workaround. I really hope someone who has access, to the Education system sees this post. Luck. I hope that the "outstanding" request will eventually stop being so outstanding! 😄

Hey everyone! I finally found the solution, so I wanted to share it here in case anyone else runs into the same issue.

The page https://github.com/settings/education/benefits does not work for re-applications. If you receive an email similar to the one I got:

you need to go directly to:
https://education.github.com/discount_requests/pack_application

What makes this especially confusing is that this isn’t explained anywhere. The re-application link isn’t included in the email, it doesn’t appear to be linked from the GitHub Education benefits page, and there doesn’t seem to be any clear indication that this separate page even exists.

I actually found this page purely by coincidence while looking around for a possible solution. I wasn’t directed there by GitHub, nor did I find it through the normal application flow. It honestly feels like a hidden page that you’re only supposed to know about if you somehow stumble across it. 😅

Anyway, everything is working now and I was able to submit the application again successfully.

Hopefully this helps someone else who gets stuck with the same “You have an outstanding discount request” message.
