Opening the launcher shows placeholder rectangles for a split second

After an interrupted firmware update required me to update the firmware using nRF Device Firmware Update on Android, opening the launcher shows placeholder rectangles for the icons and labels for a split second before showing their actual contents. This is a minor annoyance, although it does it make look a bit janky.

I tried compacting storage to no effect.

This is a feature, it is intended to make it look more responsive.

Yes - it's surprising how much faster it makes the Bangle feel. While not to everyone's tastes I guess, this change was made more than a year ago and yours is the first complaint I've seen.

Still, one of the nice things is it's trivial to change on Bangle.js. Either install another launcher that doesn't do it: https://banglejs.com/apps/?c=launch

Or fork the app loader on GitHub, delete the few lines at https://github.com/espruino/BangleApps/blob/master/apps/launch/app.js#L24-L32 and you're sorted.

Yes, as @enaon says, the app is designed this way to prevent you looking at a "loading..."/unresponsive screen instead, until it can get the app cache from the launch_utils module. Compacting storage won't significantly change loading times, but if it really does bug you enough and you don't have too many apps/files, might be worth checking out installing the iflash firmware build for faster file loading times.
