Proposal for new working group: Website & v1 Branding

How about we create a working group for putting together our new website and developing some branding for the project.

Here are proposed deliverables:

• FAIR PM logo
• FAIR PM branding guidelines (colours, typography, etc)
• New FAIR website

It would be a good project for a cross-section of contributors including designers, developers, and content writers.

fwiw, fair.pm is already running a WP multisite (the server repo has the source) if we want to use it.

I'd also be in favor of 'owning our own content' rather than relying on a third party for the website, especially given what @rmccue says.

I'd love to help. I'm familiar with mainstream agency life and users and power users perspectives. Been around forums since 2008. But not a real coder. Don't use js! I know, shameful!

Happy to help with the website dev and review process. I don't want to do any of the design, but I will want to review it.

There's no shortage of talent in this group to do this. I don't want to get in the way of others who'd like to be involved, but am happy to help with anything that doesn't involve design. :)

I can do branding, design and dev, but not alone.

This could be my first time doing something structured in this place, so.. can we organize it a little? How can we list team members and expertise, assign task, and so on? Is it possible in here or we need something else (Slack, Basecamp, Upbase and so on)?

I'm in the same position on all counts! Been developing on WordPress since 1.0 but this would be my first GitHub collaboration -- I'd be thrilled to help any way that I can, and looking forward to guidance on how to organize / sign up

It would be helpful to tackle typography and colors first before logo and site, so these can be encorporated into the logo and website proposals.
When typography and colors are done, have a competition for logo design prior to the website design, then do the same for the website.

Need to raise funds? Put a small fee on each competition, but make it a small fee, so that lower economic competitors can still enter. Or just keep it free and open to all to submit ideas.

Where do we start? May I suggest brand colors.

For what it's worth - the classic WP blue is #0073aa, and what's used in the default wp-admin color scheme is #2271b1, but the designs have shifted with GB and the new WP blue is the modern scheme's blueberry (the color in the thread above).

Orange is a very limiting color to work with for Accessibility, so I'd be hesitant to sink too much of our branding in on that. I like the idea of going with tertiary relationships, both because I think it expresses the philosophy of diversifying the WordPress ecosystem better and because i think it gives us better colors to work with.

Going with opposite colors feels somewhat like we're explicitly choosing an 'oppositional' framing for our color scheme, and that combined with the difficult colors makes me hesitant about it.

I don't like the idea of using the opposite colors of WordPress just for the sake of it, either.

In my view the brand and project should focus on the most positive possible outcome, which is offering an alternative to WP.org but not fighting against it (at least, that's how I understood it so far). And also to get as many people on board as possible.

I'm not sure if trying to be in opposition to WordPress itself from the get go is the best way to convey this message.

I knew there was a different blue . . . Guess I'm getting old, but not that old.
It has an even worse complimentary color, but the analogous colors look good.
And as @joedolson said, orange is tough on accessibility.

I agree with @crimann and @kappesante. So, maybe we should start putting some tertiary paletts together and invite others here to do likewise.
The logo doesn't need colors to start some drafts either.

I'm not sure github is the best place for reviewing things, but I don't know of any better options either, and this is where it is.

Hey all! Before we get too far down a path, we need to form an actual working group around this. There will be a number of stakeholders involved, at least for the branding aspect, so we'll want to formalize this conversation a bit.

This (and lots more!) is on the agenda for today's call if you're able to make it!

As discussed in today's call, a comms/branding/marketing group will be formed in the next phase of the project, so stay tuned for more info. :)
