A CMD window appears when launching GEMS, and closing the CMD window causes GEMS to close as well.

When I launch rungems3.bat, I get the behavior shown in the first screenshot; if I close the CMD window, the GEMS application closes as well.

If I start GEMS via gem-selektor.exe, I see the behavior in the screenshot below; closing the CMD window also causes GEMS to close.

What should I do so that I can use GEMS without a CMD/console window?

Hello, this is the normal behavior of GEMS since version 3.10, that it runs with the CMD. The CMD window will also display information, as paths to important folders and warnings in case something goes wrong, besides the usual GEMS window errors. If this window bothers you please try to minimize it.
