Expected behaviour

When syncing folders with executable files, they should remain executable

Actual behaviour

I have a folder with executable scripts (perms "-rwxr--r--"). It's synced between two computers, permissions are the same on both machines.

Again and again all permissions get changed to "-rw-r--r--" so that script suddenly are no longer running.

The permissions are actually changed on all files in the folder, even the ones that haven't changed for years. It happened today even though the last change in this folder was 11 days ago.

Steps to reproduce

No idea. It just happens spontanously and repeatedly, but not all the time (perhaps 4 or 5 times in the last month), and I haven't found out under which circumstances the permissions get changed. It's not related to actual changes in the folder.

Server configuration

Operating system: Debian
Web server: Apache
Database: MySQL 5.1.66
PHP version: 5.3.3-7+squeeze15
ownCloud version: 5.0.9

Client configuration

Client version: 1.3.0beta4
Operating system: Ubuntu 13.4
Installation path of client: /usr/bin/owncloud

Log: Can't produce one at the moment because I don't know exactly when it happens.

According to this thread (https://forum.owncloud.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=9338&p=23002#p33818), owncloud uses it's own global umask. It should really handle permissions correctly and leave them unchanged.

It's kind of worrying that ownclown just changes the permissions for no good reason.Usually the user has a good reason to make files executable or write/read protected or whatever, and owncloud shouldn't interfere.

I just opened a report for that accidently in core.

I'd like to add my steps to reproduce:

• Configure a synced folder, containing at least one file with permission 600
• Wait until the file is uploaded
• Change any file in that directory on the server (ie using notes-app) or on another client
• Wait until the file is downloaded again
• all file permissions are 644

So, not only the execute-bit gets removed, the permissions of a file/a directory are completely ignored and set to 644 after sync. The client and the server are both unaware of the original file permissions. The sync client should store those in an internal database or similar for any file it syncs.

This is really annoying. I sync my ~/.ssh client to keep known-hosts and config synced, this behaviour causes my ssh-key to be unusable because ssh refuses to use files with world-read-permission. This is also very bad regarding system security on multi-user-systems as it actually makes private files public. From this point of view this is a severe security issue.

I confirm this. Permissions and executable bit don't seem to be synchronized. Client 1.4.2 on ubuntu precise.

@devjb: The bits are not synchronized anyway, due to lacking features on the server side. The point is that the bits should not be touched if the file changes on the server side.

@ogoffart: Is that the case with the new propagator?

the new propagator works like scync did in that respect.
When downloading, we create a new file, download the content into it, then move and overwrite the old file.

It should not be too difficult to try to maintain the permission.

I would love to see this issue remedied. I have various directories containing executable scripts that I want synced between clients, but with OwnCloud sync losing the executable permissions, it's bit of a show stopper for me.

Next version of mirall should preserve file permission on the same machine.

Because permission are not stored on the server, we can't support them in the client.
