Edits show up on the map immediately, on every server. A saved
shape, a new feature, or a deletion could stay invisible (or a
deleted feature could stay visible) for up to a minute, because the
map tiles were served from a per-server cache that nothing cleared
on a write. The database now tells every server the moment a layer
changes and the stale tiles are dropped.
New maps start on OpenStreetMap. Carto now watermarks its
hosted basemaps (Positron, Voyager, Dark matter) with "API KEY
REQUIRED" unless you supply your own key, and Positron was the
default for every new map. Those three stay in the library with a
note about the key; nothing defaults to them any more. Existing
maps keep whatever basemap they have: switch them in Map settings.
