Fixed

• Sharp badges in the dock. The unread count on an app's icon, like Slack's, looked blurry while the icon was magnified under the pointer. It's now sharp at every size, and longer counts like "12" and "99+" keep their full width.
• Open GNOME apps follow a switch between dark and light. Files, Settings and other GNOME apps that were open when you switched from a dark theme to a light one (or back) kept the old colors until you reopened them. They now turn light or dark at once, and take the new theme's exact colors the next time they open.

Fixed

• Sharp dock icons. Icons in the dock looked slightly blurry whenever the pointer wasn't over them. They are now as crisp at rest as when they grow under the pointer, on ordinary and 4K screens alike, at 100%, 125%, 150% or 200% scaling.

Fixed

• One dock at your first login. On Ubuntu with Dash to Dock or Ubuntu Dock, the first login after installing could show two docks at once until you restarted. Jade Shell now turns the old dock off just before your desktop starts at that login, so only Jade Shell's dock ever shows. Your old dock still stays until you log out, so you're never without one, and jade restore brings it back.

What's new

• A faster install. The package is 3.5 MB instead of 10 MB, setup takes seconds instead of minutes (theme pictures download in the background), and on a slow line a fresh install now reaches a set-up desktop in under a minute instead of about eight.
• Works on a desktop in daily use. The installer waits while the Software app or automatic updates are busy, continues a download that was cut off, and doesn't download or reinstall what is already there.
• Plain words everywhere. The installer, setup and restore say what they do and what to do next, without technical messages; a failure shows one sentence about the cause.
• Text and QR code reading is optional, asked once at the start.
• Your dock stays until you log out; then Jade Shell's dock takes its place.
• Removing Jade Shell puts your desktop back exactly, including Ubuntu's own dock, and clears Jade Shell's own files.
• Updates from the top bar say what they're doing and wait for other updates to finish.
• Your Starship, Alacritty and VS Code settings keep their own colors and comments when you switch themes.
• The Welcome page shows each theme's colors until its picture arrives.

Jade Shell 0.9 (beta)

The first public release of Jade Shell: Omarchy's look for the GNOME you already have. It's a beta. Everything it changes is recorded and can be undone.

Install

Open the Terminal app, paste this line and press Enter. Don't download the files below by hand: the command checks your system, verifies the download and sets up your desktop, which a package installed by hand doesn't. It asks for your password once, then log out and back in once. The Welcome page opens at that first login: pick a theme, glass, icons, the Omarchy keymap and your weather city.

Needs GNOME 50. Tested on Fedora 44 and Ubuntu 26.04. Atomic desktops (Silverblue and friends) aren't supported yet.

What's in it

• 22 themes from Omarchy, dark and light, in a picker in the top bar (Super+Ctrl+Shift+Space). One click re-colors GNOME Shell, GNOME apps, Ptyxis, Kitty, Ghostty, Alacritty, VS Code, Neovim, btop, tmux, Starship, Obsidian, Vicinae and Claude Code.
• A dock with magnification, genie minimize and bouncing launches, drawn on frosted glass and smooth on high refresh rate screens.
• Tahoe icons in full color, folders in the theme's accent. They come with the package.
• A redrawn top bar in the style of Omarchy's Quattro bar: numbered workspaces, weather by the clock, one icon family for every status icon, and Claude Code and Codex usage as one icon.
• The Jade Menu (Super+Alt+Space): a keyboard menu for apps, capture, toggles, style, setup and the system.
• Clipboard history, a screenshot card (Edit, copy Text, Pin), a color picker, copy text from screen and read QR codes.
• A network panel: ping, DNS, a speed test and Wi-Fi sharing by QR code.
• A system monitor, notifications behind a bell, a shortcut sheet (Super+K) and frosted glass for the bar and menus.
• The Omarchy keymap, optional and fully reversible.
• JetBrains Mono as the monospace font of GNOME and your terminals, as in Omarchy (unless you already chose one).
• The Jade Shell app: every setting in one searchable window.

Undo

• jade theme undo walks back theme switches, one at a time.
• jade restore puts your desktop back as it was: extensions, keys, settings and configs. Your own edits are kept.
• Remove it with the same install line plus bash -s -- --uninstall.

Known limits

• The first install needs one logout, because GNOME loads extensions at login.
• GNOME Software can't list Jade Shell yet. Updates come through dnf, apt, the installer or Jade's own update notification.
• Not yet tested on real Intel GPUs. Wi-Fi was tested through a simulated access point.
• Ghostty recolors live on a theme switch, but a window already open keeps its old title bar colors until you open a new one.
