Show a series of short lines on the end of each rules, like a handle that can be grabbed to change the ruler length.
On the horizontal ruler, the lines should be vertical, about a third of the height of the rules, and inset slightly from the upper right corner. The should be slightly lighter on the left (e.g. white 50% opacity) and darker on the right (50% black) so the ruler color shows through and they look sort of 3D with a light source on the left. On on the vertical ruler the lines should be horizontal and the light source should be coming from the top.
