TL;DR: RAWmakase 0.4.1 opens WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL files, iPhone ProRAW and other linear DNGs, and monochrome DNGs. It fixes the green viewport with DisplayCAL monitor profiles, oversaturated colour on wide-gamut Windows displays, export to exFAT drives on macOS, and the colour moiré that came back on Fujifilm X-Trans photos. On Windows and Linux the window now reopens maximized if you left it that way.

New

  • WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL files (#510). Add Folder and Synchronize Folder now take .webp, .avif and .jxl files. They show in the Library and open in Develop like JPEGs, keeping their colour profile and full bit depth, their orientation, and their capture time, camera, title, caption, keywords and rating. HDR and animated files show a preview in the Library but can't be edited in Develop, which says why. They export to JPEG, TIFF or PNG; RAWmakase doesn't write these formats yet.
  • iPhone ProRAW and other linear DNGs (#543, fixes #541). DNGs that store already-demosaiced camera data, such as Apple ProRAW, Samsung phone DNGs and Adobe DNG Converter's linear DNGs, now open. They use the file's own colour matrix, so DNGs Lightroom wrote from rendered images no longer come out magenta.
  • Monochrome DNGs (#544). DNGs from monochrome cameras such as the Leica M Monochrom and Pentax K-3 Mark III Monochrome, and from film scanners, now open and develop as grey. As in Lightroom, White Balance is disabled for them; Color Grading can still tone them.
  • The window reopens maximized (#555, fixes #553). On Windows and Linux, a window you left maximized opens maximized next time. Size and position aren't restored.

Improved

  • Monitor colour follows the system profile by default on Windows (#552, fixes #550). Preferences > Display > Monitor profile now offers Use System Profile (the default), Use sRGB and Choose Profile…. On Windows the system choice uses the profile Windows assigns to the display the window is on, and follows the window to another monitor; when Windows manages colour itself (Auto colour management or HDR), RAWmakase leaves it to Windows. The status bar and Preferences name the profile in use. macOS already matched colours to the display and is unchanged; Linux has no system profile yet and shows sRGB.
  • Default exposure closer to Camera Raw on 49 more cameras (#540). RAWmakase now knows Adobe's baseline exposure for 21 Nikon bodies (including the D60 to D810 DSLRs) and for Panasonic, Sony, Olympus, Pentax and Leica bodies that used to get their make's typical value. A Nikon D7100 photo, for example, rendered about 0.15 EV darker than Camera Raw and now matches it.
  • Photos that can't be opened don't get in the way (#510). Next and Previous in Develop step past photos it can't open (offline, CMYK, HDR or animated). A photo that fails to open says "Couldn't open this photo" instead of loading forever, the error names its cause once, and Build Previews says what it skipped.

Fixed

  • DisplayCAL monitor profiles no longer turn the viewport green (#551, fixes #548). A regression in 0.4.0: DisplayCAL's default "XYZ LUT + matrix" profiles turned the viewport and Navigator green. They now render as they did in 0.3.3, and shadows on monitors with a raised black level are no longer crushed. Exports were never affected.
  • Export and catalogs work on exFAT drives on macOS (#549, fixes #546). Exporting to an exFAT drive failed with "Operation not supported (os error 45)", and so did creating a catalog or importing a Lightroom catalog onto one. They now work, still without ever replacing an existing file.
  • Fine detail on Fujifilm X-Trans photos is free of colour moiré again (#545, fixes #532). Fine regular patterns, such as mesh and louvres, could show green and magenta bands in 0.4.0. The fix for violet fringes on sharp edges stays.
  • 16-bit ProPhoto TIFFs and PNGs keep neutral greys on ARM (#536). On Apple Silicon and ARM Linux their Library previews were slightly too dark in red.
  • Linux exports go to your real Desktop and Pictures folders (#537). Export now follows the folders your desktop names (user-dirs.dirs), so a desktop in another language, such as ~/Pulpit or ~/Bilder, or a moved folder no longer gets a new ~/Desktop beside it.

Upgrade notes

  • Windows users on the default monitor setting: colours in the viewport now go through your display's Windows profile. On a wide-gamut display without Windows colour management they look less saturated than in 0.4.0, and correct. If your display is set to sRGB, choose Use sRGB. A profile you chose before is kept.
  • Existing edits on the cameras above render with Adobe's baseline exposure, so many of them, such as Nikon DSLR photos, look a little brighter.

Known limitations

  • iPhone ProRAW and Samsung DNGs carry a local tone map that Camera Raw applies and RAWmakase doesn't yet, so their default rendering can differ from Lightroom's. Floating-point and Adobe's lossy linear DNGs, and monochrome PEFs, still don't open.
  • Tiled AVIF files don't open yet.
  • On Windows, a window reopened maximized can flash briefly before the first frame is drawn. The Mac doesn't reopen maximized.

Thanks

Thanks to @priard for WebP, AVIF and JPEG XL support and the ARM ProPhoto fix, and to @Manuwarna, @info656 and @Dariusdd for their reports.

Requirements

Mac downloads require macOS 15+. Windows downloads are for Windows 10 and later on x86_64, and Windows 11 on ARM64. Linux packages are for x86_64 and ARM (aarch64): Ubuntu 24.04+ or Debian 13+, or Fedora 43+. The Arch Linux package is x86_64. AUR publication remains paused, so get the Arch package from the link above. Homebrew users update with brew upgrade --cask rawmakase.
