RAWmakase 0.4.2
TL;DR: RAWmakase 0.4.2 manages your files from the Library. Move photos and folders by dragging them in the Folders panel, make folders, rename photos one at a time or in capture order, put photos in the Trash, and move photos to another drive, with every step recoverable if RAWmakase or the computer stops part way. It also opens Lightroom's HDR merge and panorama DNGs, corrects the lens shading of DJI and Hasselblad drone DNGs, clears the remaining colour moiré on Fujifilm X-Trans photos, and lets the mouse wheel scroll the filmstrip.

New
- Move photos to another folder (#562, #569, part of #370). Drag selected photos from the grid onto any folder in the Folders panel, or choose Move to Folder… in the thumbnail menu. Their XMP sidecars go with them. RAWmakase asks first, with Cancel focused, and says how many files move and which photos stay and why. Files move by renaming, so their bytes, dates and edits stay as they were. Nothing is ever replaced: a name already taken there leaves that photo where it is. The top bar counts the photos as they move, with Stop.
- Move photos to another drive (#574). Drop photos on a folder of a root on another drive and they are copied there, checked against the original byte for byte, and then the originals go to the Trash. The question names the drive, how much is copied and how much is free there. An original that changed meanwhile, or whose drive has no Trash, stays where it was, and the status line says so. Moving to or from FAT, exFAT or network drives isn't available yet (see Known limitations).
- New Folder Inside… (#562). Make a folder on disk and in the catalog from a folder's menu, and move the selected photos into it in the same step.
- Move to Trash (#563). Delete now asks whether to remove the photos from the catalog or move their files to the Trash (the Recycle Bin on Windows). ⌘⌥⇧Delete asks only about the Trash, and Delete Rejected Photos… (⌘Delete) does it for the rejected photos shown. The question says when the photos have edits, which don't come back with Put Back. Nothing is ever deleted outright: a drive without a Trash keeps the file and says so.
- Remove from Catalog (#560). ⌥Delete, or Delete then Remove from Catalog, takes photos out of the catalog and leaves their files; in the Quick Collection, Delete takes them out of the collection.
- Rename photos and folders (#564, #342). Press F2 to rename a photo; its extension and sidecar follow. With several selected, Rename Photos names them by a Lightroom naming template (Custom Name - Sequence and the others export offers), numbered in the order they were taken, and shows each new name with anything that stops it before anything changes. Rename Folder… renames a folder with everything in it.
- Move folders (#565, #571). Drag a folder onto another folder of its root, or choose Move Folder…. Any folder but a root can be moved or renamed, including one that holds only folders. Reveal in Finder (Show in Explorer on Windows) is in every folder's menu.
- Recovery after a crash. Every change to files is journalled before it is made. If RAWmakase or the computer stops part way, the next time the catalog opens it finishes what the files prove and lists anything else under Unfinished file operations, to Put Back or Keep as Is.
- Lightroom's HDR merge and panorama DNGs open (#567, from files in #525). These DNGs store JPEG XL-compressed tiles, and the HDR merges store floating-point values; both now open in Develop.
Improved
- The mouse wheel scrolls the filmstrip (#570). Rolling the wheel over the filmstrip scrolls it sideways without Shift, in the Library and in Develop, and a vertical trackpad swipe scrolls it too.
Fixed
- Corners of DJI and Hasselblad drone DNGs are no longer dark (#561). Their lens shading correction, stored as DNG gain maps, is now applied per channel as Camera Raw does. A Hasselblad L1D-20c photo's corners were up to 11 L* darker than Camera Raw's.
- The last colour moiré on Fujifilm X-Trans photos (#554, fixes #547). Fine regular patterns about 3 pixels apart, such as mesh and slats, still showed green, purple and yellow bands after 0.4.1. A new X-Trans demosaic and a stripe colour pass clear them.
Upgrade notes
- Catalogs: existing catalogs open unchanged. RAWmakase adds its file operation journal to the catalog the first time it opens it; releases before 0.4.2 ignore it.
- X-Trans photos render through the new demosaic, so fine detail on existing edits can look slightly different.
Known limitations
- No undo for file operations. Moving, renaming and the Trash aren't in Edit > Undo; move or rename back, or use Put Back in Finder and then Synchronize Folder. Edits made in RAWmakase don't come back with a photo put back from the Trash.
- Moving between disks is limited for now. Photos move between disks formatted APFS, HFS+, NTFS or a Linux file system such as ext4. Not yet supported: moving folders to another disk or into another root folder (#572), and moving photos to or from FAT or exFAT drives (most SD cards and many external SSDs) or network drives such as a NAS (#573). RAWmakase says so when you try: copy them in Finder, then use Synchronize Folder.
- Folders can't be put in the Trash from RAWmakase yet.
- Move to Trash on Windows is tested on local drives with the Recycle Bin. On network shares, drives with the Recycle Bin turned off, or files too big for it, RAWmakase is built to refuse rather than delete when Windows wouldn't recycle a file, but that hasn't been tried on a real machine yet.
- A name that changes only in case (
ROUND.NEFtoround.NEF) can be renamed on APFS only for now.
Thanks
Thanks to @EttVenter for asking for file management (#370) and batch renaming in capture order (#342), and to @nader0903 for the Lightroom HDR and panorama DNGs (#525).
Requirements
Mac downloads require macOS 15+. Windows downloads are for Windows 10 and later on x86_64, and Windows 11 on ARM64. Linux packages are for x86_64 and ARM (aarch64): Ubuntu 24.04+ or Debian 13+, or Fedora 43+. The Arch Linux package is x86_64. AUR publication remains paused, so get the Arch package from the link above. Homebrew users update with brew upgrade --cask rawmakase.
