What's new in v5.0.0

The Web UI got rewritten from scratch.

  • Web UI: new home page with genre discovery, queue moved to its own page with filters, sorting and paging.
  • AutoSync: once a day it queues new episodes of titles you already have. No list to maintain, handles the same title in multiple languages or libraries.
  • Theming: global custom CSS, @import from a URL, and GLSL background shaders. There is a template in themes/template.css, if you want your own custom theme. You can find existing themes in external repositories, for example: https://github.com/SiroxCW/aniworld-themes which I prepared for this release.
  • API keys: everything the Web UI does is reachable as JSON, with three scopes.
  • Tests: automated suite running on GitHub Actions for Python 3.10 to 3.13.
  • Fixes: apostrophes in titles (#279), season downloads no longer stop on one failed episode (#274), hanime filename collisions (#283), progress bar, cancelling active downloads, ANIWORLD_ENABLE_BURNINGSERIES and ANIWORLD_ENABLE_KINOX env variables were ignored before and now work. If you set either to 0 in the past, those tabs disappear after updating.

Credits

  • @WimWamWom for PR #280, apostrophes and HTML entities in titles, and PR #276, mirror handling for every known serienstream host
  • @aderwinwg for finding the hanime filename collision (#283) and PR #284
  • @Niwu34 for the AutoSync "only new episodes" request and other ideas which were implemented
  • @easycrashx-nex for heavily inspiring the theme and the GLSL shader feature
  • @Yezun-hikari for testing v5 and finding missing documentation and features

Both PRs #280 and #284 could sadly not be merged through the rework, so the fixes were reapplied by hand with the authors credited as co-authors and mentioned here.

If you discover any missing or broken features, feel free to open a issue! =)
