Photon v1.0.6 represents a huge improvement in drive methodology. This change solves a few bugs and results in more precise feeds that are more robust to external friction.

This update is recommended for all users and all hardware versions of 8mm and 12mm Feeders.

This Firmware Release is NOT for 16mm and 24mm Feeders.

  • New drive structure accounts for both static and dynamic friction, reducing the drive speed after overcoming static friction. This reduction in power improves stopping precision when we reach the encoder tick.
  • Increased brake tick precision eliminates a bug where feeders would require pick position to be reset upon power cycle. Because the encoder position is exactly on the goal tick on boot, feeding can pick up without an offset on boot.
  • Greatly reducing the drive power during final positioning also means that final encoder position is much less dependent on external friction. Every feed readjusts drive power for both static and dynamic friction, so changes in tape friction are accounted for.
  • In situations where thick tape takes much longer to feed due to this new drive method, Photon will increase the aggressiveness of feeding power until the tape is changed out.
  • Feeding methodology is also broken out by feed distance to improve feeding speed for large parts
