Pithyx 1.0.0, codename Pyxis, is the first public release.

Important

This release is marked beta. We consider it stable, but it has not yet proven itself on real boxes in everyday use. That takes time, so until a stable release follows, treat it as beta: try it, report what breaks and keep a copy of data you care about on another device. Fixes come as 1.0.x updates on the stable channel.

Pithyx is a free, self-hosted NAS and server operating system with a web desktop: Debian 13, ZFS storage, file sharing over SMB, SFTP, WebDAV and FTP, users and groups with rights per folder, service and app, apps as containers from signed catalogs, a reverse proxy, network settings that roll back unless you confirm them, and signed system updates with an automatic way back. Everything stays on your box: no telemetry, no cloud account.

Download

  • pithyx-1.0.0-amd64.iso: the installer image for 64-bit x86 computers with UEFI (x86-64-v2, Secure Boot off, 2 GB RAM, a 32 GB system disk).
  • pithyx-1.0.0-amd64.iso.sha256: its checksum. Check it with sha256sum -c pithyx-1.0.0-amd64.iso.sha256.
  • pithyx-1.0.0-sources-1.tar: the source packages of every Debian package in the image (GPL).

Write the image to a USB stick, boot from it and open the address the console shows in a browser: Write the USB stick, Quick start.

Known limitations

  • Pools are not encrypted yet (ZFS native encryption with a key vault comes later), so data that needs encryption does not belong on a box yet.
  • The box is its own certificate authority; browsers warn until you trust its root (Settings > Certificates). Let's Encrypt, passkeys and the service worker come later.
  • Every elevated app right (host network, host PID, devices, capabilities, the Docker socket, host-wide access) is refused with app.elevated.unsupported.
  • No NFS, no virtual machines and no support bundles yet.

Everything else that changed is in the changelog. Questions and bugs: issues; security issues: see SECURITY.md.
