Release list
v0.2.3
Quicker to open, especially on a phone. On Android the Jot button took 3 to 4 seconds to show the form, and up to 20 seconds while a sync was running. Jot now asks Joplin for much less before the form appears: its settings, the notebook and tag lists, and the note you are in are ready before you tap. The lists are kept across restarts, so the first form after starting the app does not wait for them. Jot also starts faster, so its button is ready sooner while the other plugins are still loading.
Measured on a Pixel with Joplin 3.7.8:
| Before | Now | |
|---|---|---|
| Idle | 1.3 s | 1.15 s |
| Right after a sync | 10 s | 3 to 5 s |
| During a sync | 21 s | 2 to 5 s |
Most of what is left is Joplin creating the dialog itself.
The form appears in one piece. On a phone the form could show its text and buttons without a background for a moment, then change size and shape while you were already typing. It now appears once, at its final size, inside its dialog. On desktop it also opens straight at its final size.
Also:
- A notebook deleted on another device since Jot last read the lists is caught before anything is created in it. Jot says so and shows the form again, as you typed it.
- In split screen on a phone, the form fits the window.
v0.2.2
Quick notes and notes from text start differently (#6). Jot now tells a quick note (opened with nothing highlighted: the shortcut, the menu or the toolbar button) from a note from text in a note (opened from highlighted text, or by typing ++), and Settings › Plugins › Jot has defaults for each:
- Notebook for quick notes and Notebook for notes from text in a note: the current notebook, or any notebook you pick, such as an inbox for quick notes. A notebook you chose in 0.2.0 or 0.2.1 becomes the one for quick notes.
- Fill in the tags of the note you are in: Never, For notes from text in a note (the new default), or Always.
- Add a back link to the note you are in: Never (the default), For notes from text in a note, or Always.
So a reminder can be just the shortcut, a title and Enter, into your inbox with no tags, while a note from highlighted text lands next to its source with its tags and a back link. If you had switched the tags off or the back link on in 0.2.0, that choice carries over as Never or Always.
Defaults for In this note (#5). In this note, for highlighted text and In this note, for the typed trigger are now settings, and the form starts on them every time. Jot no longer remembers the last choice you made, so every choice in the form has its default in Settings.
Title and Tags grow with what they hold (#4). Both fields grow up to three lines, and past that they scroll, with a scrollbar showing there is more. Tab into either puts the cursor at the end, ready to add to it, instead of selecting everything, so the first key you press no longer replaces the tags already there. A click still puts the cursor where you click. Enter still creates the note and never starts a new line.
Type reads Note, To-do, the order of Cockpit's buttons. The default is still To-do.
v0.2.1
The form no longer shrinks on Android. On a phone the form opened at the right size and then grew narrower and narrower. Android Joplin sizes a plugin's dialog to its content and re-measures it twice a second, while Jot sized its content from the dialog itself, so every measurement took a little more off. The form now takes its width from the screen, which the dialog cannot change, and holds still.
Nothing changes on the desktop.
v0.2.0
Tags from the note you are in (#1). The form's Tags start with the tags of the note you are in, followed by a comma and a space, so you clear what does not fit or type the next one straight away. On by default; Settings › Plugins › Jot › Fill in the tags of the note you are in.
A back link to the note you are in (#2). The form has a Back link row: Add puts a line linking to the note you are in at the top of the new note, then an empty line, then the text, or at the bottom if you prefer (Back link position). Hover Add to see the line. The text is a setting with Copy Note ID's placeholders, Parent {note_type}: {note_link} by default, so Extracted from: {note_link} works too; {note_title}, {note_id}, {notebook_name}, {notebook_path} and {notebook_id} are there as well. Off by default; the form's row starts on the setting and you can switch it per note.
A notebook for new notes (#3). Settings › Plugins › Jot › Notebook: The current notebook (the one of the note you are in), or any notebook, such as an inbox. The form starts there and you can still pick another.
A calmer form. Two buttons, Create and Cancel. Whether the new note opens is now the form's Open row: No (the default), In editor, or New window, starting on the setting "Open the new note", which replaces "Create and open opens the note". Every choice (Type, In this note, Back link, Open) is one line of buttons; the form is wider, every control one height, and the heading shows "Enter creates · Esc cancels". Enter creates from anywhere in the form except the Text, including right after a date picked with the mouse, and with the title still empty it puts the cursor back in the title instead of closing the form. The form also opens faster on collections with many notebooks or tags.
v0.1.2
Jot keeps you on the note you were reading.
With the note list on All notes, creating a note with a tag could put you in the new note, even though you pressed Create and not Create and open. That comes from Joplin: a tag change makes it reload the note list and select the note at the top, which is the one just created. Jot now notices, opens the note you were reading again, and puts back your scroll position and caret in the Markdown editor. Joplin can only reopen a note by showing its notebook, so the note list then switches from All notes to that notebook.
The same applies to Edit with Jot… when you move a note to another notebook or change its tags. And with highlighted text or ++, the link is now always written into the note you were reading, never into the new one.
v0.1.1
No change to the plugin itself. The README now has screenshots of the form, the highlighted-text and ++ routes, edit mode and the date picker, so the plugin page shows what Jot does, and this is the first release published by the repository's own workflow.
If you already have 0.1.0, there is nothing new to install.
v0.1.0
Jot is quick capture for Joplin: a small form that creates a note or a to-do with its title, a line or two of text, the notebook, tags and the due date, and does not open it, so the note you are reading keeps the focus.
Ways in
- Tools › Jot…, with Ctrl+Shift+J as its shortcut (change it under Options › Keyboard Shortcuts).
- Jot from the selection… in the editor's right-click menu: the first line of the highlighted text becomes the title. You choose whether the text is replaced with a link to the new note (the default), kept, or followed by a link.
- Typing
++at the start of a line or after a space in the Markdown editor. The trigger is a setting; empty turns it off. By default the++is replaced with a link to the new note; one Undo restores it. - The Jot button in the note toolbar.
- Edit with Jot… in the note list's right-click menu: the same form prefilled with the note's title, type, notebook, tags and due date. Save writes only what you changed, and the note is never opened.
The form. Type, Title, Text, Notebook, Tags and Due. The title is focused when the form opens, so a title and Enter is all a capture needs. The bell on the Due row unfolds the Cockpit date picker. Create stays where you are; Create and open opens the note, in the editor or in a new window by setting.
Settings. What Jot creates by default, where Create and open opens the note, the typed trigger, the day start time, and the toolbar button.
For other plugins. joplin.commands.execute('jot.open', { mode: 'new' | 'edit', ... }) opens the form with presets or in edit mode and resolves the created or edited note's id.
Known limits of 0.1.0. Nothing has been checked on Android yet. In the Rich Text editor the typed trigger does not work and "Add a link after it" is not offered. The trigger ignores Markdown context, so ++ after a space fires inside a code block too; cancel once and that occurrence is left alone.
