Display Values

The map displays each station with a single value. The value is calculated for a single channel for the selected metric over the time range. The selected metric and the display value can be changed on the right. If there is no data for the metric, it will not be selectable. MUSTANGular will choose the first channel that has data, in order of the channel prioritization list. The priority can be configured by selecting channel priority and rearranging the channels. {MORE HERE ABOUT CHANNEL SELECTION}

Binning and Coloring

In order to color the stations, all of the values are separated into bins. By default, the value is the average of the data for a station over time. The default binning varies by data type.

For most data, MUSTANGular defaults to the 5th percentile for the minimum binning value, the 95th percentile for the maximum, and 3 bins of even width. The binning range is inclusive on the lower end and inclusive on the upper end. Values greater than the max value or less than the min value are considered outliers.

For example:

  • Low outliers: < 2.00
  • Bin 1: 2.00 - < 150.00
  • Bin 2: 150.00 - < 290.00
  • Bin 3: 290 - < 436.00
  • High outliers: > 436.00

For boolean metrics, the default behavior is 2 bins with min = 0 and max = 1:

  • Low outliers: < 0.00
  • Bin 1: 0.00 - < 0.50
  • Bin 2: 0.50 - 1.00
  • High outliers: > 1.00

For percentage metrics, the default behavior is 5 bins with min = 0 and max = 100:

  • Low outliers: < 0.00
  • Bin 1: 0.00 - < 20.00
  • Bin 2: 20.00 - < 40.00
  • Bin 3: 40.00 - < 60.00
  • Bin 4: 60.00 - < 80.00
  • Bin 5: 80.00 - 100.00
  • High outliers: > 100.00

For polarity metrics, the default behavior is 2 bins with min = -1 and max = 1:

  • Low outliers: < -1.00
  • Bin 1: -1.00 - < 0.00
  • Bin 2: 0.00 - 1.00
  • High outliers: > 1.00

Channel Priority:

The display channel is selected based on the user's prioritization of the channels. MUSTANGular will display data for a station using the first channel, in order of the prioritized list, that has data.

Display Values:

MUSTANGular displays data for a station using one channel at a time. (See: Channel Precendence) The display value indicates what value is shown for the station. Possible values are:

maximum : highest measurement for the channel
minimum : lowest measurement for the channel
average : average of the measurements for the channel
median : median of the measurements for the channel
5thpercentile : 5th percentile of the measurements for the channel
95thpercentile : 95th percentile of measurements for the channel

Binning:

The coloring of icons is determined by sorting all of the displayed values into bins. The upper and lower limits of binned values and the number of bins are selected by the user. The bins are even in width and inclusive at the lower boundary and exclusive at the upper boundary. Any values that are outside of the limits of the bins are categorized as high or low outliers.

Key:

The key has checkboxes for each "bin" that allows users to toggle the corresponding values on the map. The histogram on the key represents the proportion of stations that fall into that bin.
