PlexiChore 1.1.2 — Windows (pre-release)

Choose a tag to compare

@pntapps pntapps released this 22 Oct 12:57

A bug-fix update for the PlexiChore Windows host. Recommended for everyone on 1.1.0 or 1.1.1.

What's fixed

  • Your screen always comes back when the tablet disconnects. In rare cases, especially if your monitor went to sleep during a Primary session, the tablet's invisible virtual screen could stay on as the main display after disconnecting. Your desktop icons and taskbar seemed to vanish. PlexiChore now checks after every disconnect that your monitor is the main display again and the virtual screen is off, and fixes it if Windows refused the change. It also re-checks every 15 seconds while no tablet is connected.

Also included from 1.1.1: touch and pen work in Primary mode when a monitor is attached.

The Android app needs no update.

If this happened to you on an older version: open Settings → System → Display, select your monitor, tick Make this my main display, then select the other display and choose Disconnect this display.

Pre-release. Tested on Windows 11 (GTX 1060) with a Galaxy Tab S8 (Android 16). Please report issues.

Downloads

File For
PlexiChoreSetup-1.1.2.exe Windows 10 (1809) or newer, 64-bit. Installer: Start menu entry, uninstaller, and optional start with Windows and firewall rules. Installs over 1.1.x.
PlexiChore-Windows-1.1.2-portable.exe The same app as a single file that runs without installing. It's large (~229 MB) because the .NET runtime is built in, and the first launch takes up to ~30 s while it unpacks.
SHA256SUMS.txt Checksums of both files.
Android app Use PlexiChore-Android-1.0.0.apk from v1.0.0.

The Mac app is unchanged; get it from v1.0.0.

Install

  1. Close PlexiChore if it's running (right-click the tray icon → Exit).
  2. Run PlexiChoreSetup-1.1.2.exe. The files are not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may say "Windows protected your PC". Click More info → Run anyway. You can check the download against SHA256SUMS.txt first.
  3. For Extend and Primary, the app installs the signed, open-source Virtual Display Driver from Extended display → Install (one administrator prompt). If you used 1.1.x it's already installed.

Full setup and connection steps: see the 1.1.0 notes.

Good to know

  • In Primary mode the taskbar and new windows go to the tablet, but apps that remember their last position (Terminal, Explorer, browsers) reopen on your monitor. Drag them over or press Win+Shift+←/→. With no monitor plugged in, everything is on the tablet.

Known limits

  • The Wi-Fi stream is not encrypted. Use the USB cable, or Wi-Fi only on networks you trust (connecting still needs your approval on the PC). USB is also smoother at 2560×1600.
  • With no monitor: PlexiChore starts only after you sign in to Windows; a tablet's first Wi-Fi pairing can't be approved (pair once with a monitor or use USB); starting the PC with no monitor hasn't been tested yet.
  • Up to 60 Hz. Exclusive-fullscreen games may fail to capture; HDR isn't supported.
  • UAC prompts and the lock screen can't be captured.
  • Changing the virtual display's list of resolutions requires Repair (administrator).

@pntapps pntapps released this 22 Oct 12:17

A bug-fix update for the PlexiChore Windows host.

What's fixed

  • Touch and pen now work in Primary mode when a monitor is attached. In 1.1.0, Primary mode moves your monitor to the left of the tablet, and every touch and pen stroke landed on that monitor instead of the tablet. Extend and Mirror weren't affected.

Nothing else changed since 1.1.0. The Android app needs no update.

Pre-release. Tested on Windows 11 (GTX 1060) with a Galaxy Tab S8 (Android 16). Please report issues.

PlexiChore 1.1.0 — Windows (pre-release)

@pntapps pntapps released this 22 Oct 06:57

The first packaged Windows host for PlexiChore: turn an Android tablet into a portable monitor for your Windows PC. You can use it as an extended display, as your main display, or as a mirror, over a USB cable or Wi-Fi. Touch, pen and an on-screen keyboard work on the tablet.

New: no monitor needed. If no monitor is plugged into the PC, the tablet becomes the PC's main screen automatically.

Pre-release. Tested on Windows 11 (GTX 1060) and Windows 10 (GT 710) with a Galaxy Tab S8 (Android 16). Other PCs and tablets should work but haven't been tested yet; please report issues.

PlexiChore-Windows-1.1.0-portable.exe The same app as a single file that runs without installing. It's large (~229 MB) because the .NET runtime is built in, and the first launch takes up to ~30 s while it unpacks.

Android app Use PlexiChore-Android-1.0.0.apk from v1.0.0. It works with this Windows host.

The Mac app is unchanged; get it from v1.0.0.

Install

Windows PC

  1. Run PlexiChoreSetup-1.1.0.exe. The files are not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may say "Windows protected your PC". Click More info → Run anyway. You can check the download against SHA256SUMS.txt first.
  2. Choose the options you want. Allow tablets on my network to connect adds Windows Firewall rules for TCP 47800 and UDP 47801, which Wi-Fi needs. USB works without them.
  3. Open PlexiChore. For Extend and Primary, go to Extended display → Install. This downloads and installs the signed, open-source Virtual Display Driver (one administrator prompt). Mirror works without it.

Android tablet: install the APK from v1.0.0, open PlexiChore and follow the short setup.

Connect

  • USB (best): turn on USB debugging on the tablet (Settings › Developer options), plug it into the PC and accept the prompt. The app's USB page can download Android platform-tools (adb) for you.
  • Wi-Fi: tablet and PC on the same network. The first time, the tablet shows a 4-digit code; approve it on the PC.
  • On the tablet pick Extend, Primary or Mirror and tap Connect.

What's in it

  • Extend, Primary and Mirror, plus portrait when you rotate the tablet.
    • In Primary mode the tablet becomes the main display. Your original layout comes back when you disconnect, or at the next start if the app was closed unexpectedly.
  • No monitor plugged in → the tablet is the main screen. Whatever mode the tablet asks for, PlexiChore uses Primary.
    • The virtual screen stays on while it's the PC's only display, so Windows always has a screen.
    • Plug a monitor back in and the virtual screen is removed within about 15 seconds.
  • Hardware H.264 encoding through Windows Media Foundation, with a software fallback; tested on NVIDIA GPUs. Up to 60 fps.
  • Windows display scale set automatically to match the tablet (200% on a Tab S8). The tablet's − / + buttons change it while streaming.
  • Touch, pen and scroll; on-screen keyboard on the tablet.
  • A short grace period after a dropped connection, so reconnects are instant and windows stay where they were.
  • Tray app, start with Windows, Help pages.

Known limits

  • The Wi-Fi stream is not encrypted. Anyone on the same network who captures traffic could see the tablet's picture. Use the USB cable, or Wi-Fi only on networks you trust (connecting still needs your approval on the PC).
  • With no monitor:
    • PlexiChore starts only after you sign in to Windows, so sign in blind or turn on automatic sign-in.
    • A tablet's first Wi-Fi pairing can't be approved, because the prompt appears on the PC's screen. Pair once with a monitor attached, or use USB.
    • Starting the PC with no monitor attached hasn't been tested yet.
  • Up to 60 Hz. Games work best in borderless windowed mode; exclusive fullscreen may fail to capture. HDR isn't supported.
  • Weak GPUs (e.g. GT 710) reach about 51–55 fps with full-screen motion.
  • UAC prompts and the lock screen can't be captured; the tablet shows the last picture meanwhile.
  • Changing the virtual display's list of resolutions requires Repair (administrator).

PlexiChore 1.0.0 (beta) — Mac + Android

Choose a tag to compare

@pntapps pntapps released this 21 Oct 19:37

Turn an Android tablet into a portable monitor for your Mac — as an extended display, your main display, or a mirror — over a USB cable or Wi-Fi. Touch, pen and an on-screen keyboard work on the tablet.

Beta. Tested on a MacBook Air (Apple Silicon, macOS 27) with a Galaxy Tab S8 (Android 16). Other Macs and tablets should work but haven't been tested yet — please report issues.

Downloads

File For
PlexiChore-Mac-1.0.0.dmg Mac — macOS 13 or newer, Apple Silicon and Intel. Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple.
PlexiChore-Android-1.0.0.apk Android tablet — Android 8 or newer.
SHA256SUMS.txt Checksums of both files.

Install

Mac

  1. Open the DMG and drag PlexiChore into Applications, then open it (it lives in the menu bar).
  2. Allow Screen Recording, Accessibility (for touch and keyboard input) and Local Network when macOS asks.

Android tablet

  1. Download the APK on the tablet and open it. Android asks to allow installing apps from this source (your browser or Files) — allow it once.
  2. Open PlexiChore and follow the short setup.

Connect

  • USB (best): turn on USB debugging on the tablet (Settings › Developer options), plug it into the Mac and accept the prompt. Requires Android platform-tools (adb); the Mac app's USB page can download it for you.
  • Wi-Fi: tablet and Mac on the same network. The first time, the tablet shows a 4-digit code — approve it on the Mac.
  • On the tablet pick Extend, Primary or Mirror and tap Connect.

What's in it

  • Extend, Primary (tablet becomes the main display; your layout is restored on disconnect, quit or crash) and Mirror; portrait when you rotate the tablet.
  • ~60 fps hardware H.264 with low latency over USB.
  • Touch, pen, scroll; on-screen keyboard with Esc / Tab / Ctrl / ⌥ / ⌘ / arrows (⌘C, ⌘V… work) and physical keyboards on the tablet.
  • − / + text size from the in-stream controls (swipe down from the top edge or tap with three fingers).
  • Optional Keep the tablet on with the lid closed (Mac: Extended display › Options, charger connected).
  • Help pages in both apps.

If the screen ever looks wrong

Press ⌃⌥⌘D (Control-Option-Command-D) on the Mac, or use the menu bar › Release Extended Display. The tablet display is removed instantly and your displays are restored. Quitting PlexiChore does the same.

Known limits

  • The Wi-Fi stream is not encrypted. Anyone on the same network who captures traffic could see the tablet's picture. Use the USB cable, or Wi-Fi only on networks you trust (connecting still needs your approval on the Mac).
  • Rotating the tablet or changing the text size blanks the tablet for about a second while macOS rebuilds the display.
  • Extend and Primary use a private macOS display API; a future macOS update could break them (Mirror keeps working).
  • Not yet verified by hand: pinch-to-zoom, two-finger scroll / right-click, S-Pen pressure on the Mac, sleep/wake, Intel Macs.
  • The Windows host isn't packaged in this release — build it from source (see the README).
