Improved CDR Modelling, Fuel Markets, and Inventory Compatibility
premise 2.4.7
This release substantially improves carbon-dioxide-removal modelling, corrects fuel-market supplier handling, and adds several inventory and ecoinvent compatibility fixes.
Highlights
Carbon dioxide removal
- Scale electricity and heat/fuel inputs independently using carrier-specific IAM efficiency signals, while leaving
material inputs and biosphere flows unchanged. - Apply practical lower bounds to DAC energy requirements and split shared IAM production volumes between carrier-
specific DAC routes to prevent double counting. - Expand CDR mappings for IMAGE, REMIND, REMIND-EU, MESSAGE, WITCH, and GCAM, including compatibility with legacy IMAGE
Carbon Capturevariables. - Add regionalized eucalyptus and poplar/willow afforestation routes for ecoinvent 3.11 and newer.
- Add a mapped cement MEA capture-and-storage activity representing one kilogram of non-fossil CO₂ stored.
- Harmonize wood BECCS, biomethane SMR+CCS, biomass-fermentation CCS, and cement capture inventories as host-excluding capture and storage modules.
- Add hydrogen-heated DAC variants and improve CDR reporting, logging, classifications, and SimaPro export metadata.
- Fix fresh imports of the coastal enhanced-weathering inventory.
Fuel markets and transformations
- Correct cutoff fuel markets so exchanges to waste-treatment suppliers use the waste-convention sign after share normalization.
- Exclude used-cooking-oil biodiesel with CCS from consequential diesel marginal mixes.
- Deduplicate regionalized suppliers and consolidate duplicate technosphere exchanges in generated markets.
- Update REMIND chemical-sector mappings to use final energy excluding non-energy use.
Inventories and ecoinvent compatibility
-
Revise the wave-energy inventory to correct machining quantities, vessel operations, component transport,
manufacturing inputs, unsupported capital goods, and end-of-life assumptions; also fix previously unlinked exchanges. -
Preserve activity classifications in runtime caches and restore them when loading legacy caches.
-
Make consequential blacklist replacement locations ecoinvent-version aware.
-
Add backward migration from monoethanolamine in ecoinvent 3.11 inventories to the methyldiethanolamine supplier
available in ecoinvent 3.10. -
Load afforestation inventories only for ecoinvent 3.11 and newer.
-
Avoid a false transport-validation failure for hydrogen transport datasets.
Tests and documentation
- Expand CDR and fuel-market regression coverage across IAM models, ecoinvent versions, and system models.
- Improve LCIA regression diagnostics by reporting all divergent scores together.
- Make the ecoinvent 3.12 superstructure test select a registered GWP method reliably.
- Refresh affected deterministic LCIA baselines.
- Expand the documentation for CDR transformations, carrier-specific energy scaling, fuel-market conventions, and
updated inventories.
