v0.8.3

@github-actions github-actions released this 01 Oct 10:21

Sleep timer

  • Set the automatic timer's hours and duration by typing them, and start a timer of any length (1 minute to 12 hours) from the Tools page.
  • The fade-out length is adjustable now, from 5 seconds to 1 hour.

Library

  • The "library is updating" notifications are gone. A small icon in the title bar shows scanning and syncing instead, and a check mark when it's done. Errors still appear as notifications.

Torrents

  • (fixed). MacOS. A torrent with several hundred files could run out of open files and break the library scan next to it.

  • The window now has a title, so taskbars and Alt+Tab on Windows and Linux show "Pawse" instead of an empty name.

Tools

A new Tools button in the title bar (off by default: turn it on in Settings).

  • Sleep timer: pause playback after a set time or at the end of the current track. You can also set an automatic night timer in Settings → General: pick the hours and how long it should run, and pawse starts the timer itself when you play at night.
  • Covers: finds covers for albums that don't have one (iTunes, MusicBrainz) and saves cover.jpg next to the files.
  • AI prompt: turns your library and listening history into a prompt you can paste into any chatbot for recommendations.

Scrobbling

  • Rules before sending: clean up tags on their way to Last.fm and other services, for example remove "Remastered" suffixes, or add your own find-and-replace rules. Your files and listening history keep the original text.
  • Scrobbling and likes for media servers: plays and likes are now sent to Jellyfin and Subsonic servers too.

Media servers

  • DLNA / UPnP: MiniDLNA, NAS and router media servers. Search the network or type the address by hand. A server that gets a new address is found again on its own.

Lyrics

  • Switch between the .lrc file, the file's tags and LRCLIB for each track, or prefer LRCLIB by default.

Linux

  • pawse now checks that PipeWire's ALSA plugin is installed. If it isn't, a window shows the install command for your distribution instead of playing to the wrong device.

Network sources

  • Subsonic servers: Navidrome, Gonic, Airsonic and other Subsonic-compatible servers. Their music appears in your library next to your local folders.
  • Jellyfin: connect with your username and password, and your music library syncs into pawse.
  • Torrents: add a magnet link or a .torrent file and listen right away, without downloading the whole thing first.
  • Import favorites from a Subsonic or Jellyfin server into Liked.
  • One track, several places: if the same album is both on disk and on a server, pawse treats it as one album and plays the local copy first.
  • Every source shows whether it's online, and a server that goes down doesn't take your library with it. Everything you add lives in the new Settings → Library.

Network cache

  • Tracks are saved to disk as you listen, so tracks you've already played start instantly and play offline. You can set a size limit or clear the cache at any time. Once the cache is over its limit, the oldest tracks are removed first.
  • Save to cache: download a whole album or artist ahead of time, for example before a flight.
  • Move to local library: turn a network album into real files in your music folder, with tidy names (Artist/Year - Album/NN - Title) and a cover. Likes, playlists and listening history stay attached to it.

Playlists and likes that don't get lost

  • Likes and playlists now survive almost anything: a rescan, moving or renaming files, removing a folder and adding it back. pawse recognises the same track by its file and tags, even if it moved somewhere else.
  • Unplugged drives are handled properly: when a folder or external drive is unavailable, its tracks are hidden until it's back. Before, they disappeared from playlists and likes. Playlists show them as unavailable in the meantime.
  • Save the queue as a playlist in one click from the queue panel.

Also

  • On Windows and Linux, pawse follows your system's default audio device when you switch it.
  • Animations respect your system's "Reduce motion" setting.
  • The audio device button in the header can be hidden (Settings → Appearance).
  • UI polish across the app: panels, empty screens, onboarding.

Minor UI polish

v0.7.1

  • Theme that follows the cover art: the interface takes its colour — and light or dark — from the album that's playing. Off by default, switch it on in Settings → Interface. Your theme still sets the contrast and keeps all of its text colours.
  • Customizable now playing — the third line in the player is now a setting: tech specs (default), year, album (clickable) or nothing.

Scrobbling

  • Several services at once: Last.fm, Libre.fm, ListenBrainz (including a custom server) and a local CSV log. Each one is enabled and configured on its own.
  • Optional love sync: liking a track in pawse also loves it on the service, and unliking removes it there.
  • Import loved tracks from your profile into Liked - nothing is sent back.
  • Scrobble the first artist only, instead of joining every performer into one name.
  • Clearer sign-in: you can see that pawse is waiting for you to confirm in the browser, refresh an expired link, or cancel.

Cover view and lyrics

  • Cover view is more flexible and looks better.
  • Karaoke lyrics: the current line fills as it plays and the rest dim - both can be tuned or turned off.
  • Background blur is configurable now: blur intensity and how see-through the interface is over it.

Also

  • Clear the queue in one click.
  • Updated UI engine, plus small improvements and fixes throughout the app.

Known issue

On Linux, HDMI audio from AMD graphics can drop out while the picture on screen stays still. This is a driver bug — pawse keeps feeding an uninterrupted stream the whole time. As a workaround, keep a browser tab open with something moving on it: the pawse web remote works well, since its clock ticks every second and that keeps the machine from idling the display.

  • New grid view for albums — browse your library as a wall of cover art. It's the new default; you can switch back to the list in Settings → Interface.
  • Smoother, lighter scrolling through large libraries.

Artists — the Artists tab can now group by the album artist tag instead of each track's own artist, so an album stops splitting into "Band", "Band feat. Guest" and "Band/Someone". Tracks with no album artist fall back to their track artist, and on albums where nothing carries the tag Pawse works out the artist the tracks share. Pick the mode under Settings → Interface → Artists view.

Linux — Pawse now embeds AppImage update information and ships a .zsync file, so AppImage managers like AM and AppImageUpdate can update it themselves. When installed that way, Pawse's built-in updater steps aside instead of trying to overwrite itself and failing on permissions.

Thanks to @kazam0180 for the nudge (#2).
