ActionLay 1.4.2
ActionLay 1.4.2
ActionLay 1.4.2 adds automatic updates to stable desktop builds.
What’s changed
- Check for newer stable releases at startup without blocking the interface.
Choose Yes, Not now, Skip this version, or Don't ask again. - Restore skipped-version prompts or enable startup checks again under
Settings → Advanced → Automatic updates. Choices survive application restarts. - Show download progress and verify the release asset's SHA-256 checksum before
installing. ActionLay closes for installation and restarts afterward. - Windows installer updates preserve the installation directory and current-user
or all-user mode, requesting UAC for all-user installations. Portable copies
replace only their executable. - macOS updates replace the running
.appat its actual location, including
custom directories and names. Standalone copies replace only their executable. - Linux portable copies replace their executable. DEB/RPM installations use system
updates and explain this in preferences instead of offering in-app updates. - Development builds never check for updates; prereleases are never offered.
- Translate the update interface into all 34 supported languages and refresh the
bundled font subsets.
Save edited layouts and finish exports before updating. Portable replacements
need a writable executable directory. Downloads that fail validation leave the
current installation intact; installation failures are reported on the next start.
The auto-updater starts with 1.4.2: users of older versions must install this
release manually once. The browser continues to update through the published web app.
Download and install
- Windows 10/11 x64: use
actionlay-1.4.2-windows-x64-setup.exe. - macOS 12 or newer, Apple Silicon and Intel: use
actionlay-1.4.2-macos-universal.dmg, then drag ActionLay to Applications. - Linux x64: follow the signed APT/DNF repository instructions, using the stable channel.
- Browser: open ActionLay Web. Processing stays on your device.
Portable Windows/Linux builds, native DEB/RPM packages, dependency sources,
the browser bundle and SHA256SUMS are also attached. Builds are not Developer ID
signed or Apple-notarized; macOS and Windows may require allowing an unknown publisher.
Known limits
- The INSGPS parser supports the packed 53-byte representation observed in an
Insta360 phone sample. Other models, app versions or firmware variants are not
guaranteed. Speed values are preserved; no official-software stationary filter
is reproduced. - Timestamp matching establishes temporal compatibility, not proof of camera
identity. Incorrect recording clocks can prevent automatic matching. Long
telemetry gaps do not qualify solely because the outer date range overlaps. - The browser depends on browser codecs and WebCodecs. Export supports H.264/H.265
MP4 and source AAC audio when supported. ProRes, transparent overlays, PNG
sequences and manual video rotation controls remain desktop features. Without
direct file saving, downloads are buffered in memory and limited to 256 MB.
Map providers must allow browser CORS requests. - Desktop export processes one source file with GoPro metadata and linked
GPX/FIT/INSGPS activities, using eight-bit SDR decoding. Other embedded native
camera telemetry and joined chapter timelines are not included in export;
HDR/ten-bit preservation is not implemented. Other embedded camera telemetry
and joined timelines are not connected in the browser. - Insta360 playback shows raw video, without 360 stitching or reframing.
- Privacy zones affect maps; they do not redact footage or other GPS widgets.
ActionLay 1.4.1
ActionLay 1.4.1
ActionLay 1.4.1 makes telemetry source controls easier to find on desktop and web.
What’s changed
- Rename Video sources to Metric sources throughout the interface, including
menus and the source dialog. All 34 translations use the same terminology,
including English. - Add Metric sources to the desktop and browser toolbar.
- Opening metric sources without a video now shows an instruction to open a video
first, instead of silently doing nothing. This works from the menu, toolbar and
browser source section. - When the video already provides extracted metrics, source controls explain that
an external source file can override them. The notice follows progressive
telemetry loading and is translated in all 34 languages.
The INSGPS support, automatic activity matching, alignment and export behavior
introduced in 1.4.0 are retained.
See the activity source guide
for matching rules, offset examples, the INSGPS representation and regression coverage.

ActionLay 1.4.0
ActionLay 1.4.0
ActionLay 1.4.0 adds Insta360 phone GPS files, automatic activity matching on
desktop and web, linked telemetry in exports and desktop video rotation controls.
What’s new
Linked activities on desktop and web
- INSGPS support: read Insta360 phone GPS files alongside GPX and FIT,
retaining millisecond timestamps, coordinates, stored speed, course and altitude. - Multiple files and folders: match activity sample times against the video's
UTC reference. A single compatible candidate is linked automatically. Multiple
candidates are listed with filenames and UTC ranges so you can choose. If none
match, a clear warning suggests setting Video UTC or selecting a single file. - Single-file alignment: use compatible video/activity timestamps, or align
their beginnings when dates cannot be matched. A warning explains the fallback
and suggests adjusting the activity offset if visual alignment needs correction.
Positive offsets move activity data later in the video. - Export linked telemetry: the selected activity and offset are used for both
preview and export. Embedded camera values fill activity gaps. Progressive
camera metadata updates preserve the linked activity in the browser. - Remember source settings: desktop retains links and alignment per video.
The browser retains alignment settings, but videos and activity files must be
selected again after reloading. - Source selection explains single-file alignment and automatic discovery from
multiple files or a folder before you choose. The guidance, new controls and
actionable warnings are translated in all 34 languages.
Desktop video rotation
- Automatic respects the video's display-matrix orientation.
- Manual 0°, 90° clockwise, 180° and 90° counterclockwise overrides
are remembered per video and apply to preview, editor canvas and export. - CLI exports support
--rotation auto|0|90|180|270.
See the activity source guide

ActionLay 1.3.0
ActionLay 1.3.0 introduces a browser version, lets you copy whole dashboard sections between layouts, and improves historical telemetry loading across desktop and web.
What’s new
Browser version
- Play local videos with telemetry overlays, edit layouts and export H.264/H.265 MP4 using browser media APIs. Processing runs on your device; video files are not uploaded to a processing server.
- Import and download layouts, including packaged fonts and images. Preferences and up to ten recent layouts persist in localStorage; videos must be selected again after reloading.
- The interface follows the browser language and offers the same 34 language catalogues as desktop. Full-screen includes overlays; controls and the pointer hide after three seconds without mouse movement. Videos can be opened by dropping them onto the page.
- The web bundle is attached to stable releases and deployed to GitHub Pages. Development commits test the browser app without replacing the published stable version.
- See browser capabilities and limitations.
Layout editor, on desktop and web
- Copy sections between layouts: select a widget or container, use Copy or Ctrl/Command+C, open another layout and paste. Children, geometry and packaged assets are preserved. Clipboard contents survive closing and reopening the editor within the same application session.
- Lock selection: the Layers tree can protect selected sections or multiple widgets from accidental selection of children or deselection by preview clicks. Move, resize and copy still work; selecting a level in the tree releases the lock.
- Optional scaling of children: drag the corner handle to resize only the container, or hold Shift to scale the section and its nested children proportionally. The instruction appears in the properties panel and the handle tooltip. Shift can change the mode during a gesture, and one undo restores the complete operation.
- Moto: GPS coordinates have been removed, leaving the map and compass higher up. Training: GPS coordinates have been replaced by a route map alongside the altitude chart.
Historical telemetry and export
- Historical data requirements are shared across maps, charts, G-meters, filtered compasses and cumulative metrics. Each affected widget shows a percentage spinner until its own required data is ready.
- Playback reads current telemetry progressively. A separate indexed reader recovers full routes or journey charts independently of playback seeks; finite history windows follow the requested time. Previously loaded metadata is reused.
- Known empty metadata intervals count as read without inventing metric values. Linking activity data does not falsely mark camera telemetry as loaded.
- Export waits for complete, validated metadata when any visible widget needs the full recording, including journey charts without a map. Otherwise, it reads the necessary history as export advances rather than preloading unrelated future metadata. Loading indicators remain outside exported pixels.
Development and reliability
- The building and contributing guide covers desktop and web setup, shared architecture, tests, packaging and release workflows.
- Browser dependencies are isolated from the four desktop targets. Desktop binaries keep their native FFmpeg backend.
- Added regressions for cross-layout clipboard operations and assets, section selection and scaling, backward seeks and history coverage, individual widget loading indicators, and full-history versus progressive exports.
Download and install
- Windows 10/11 x64: use
actionlay-1.3.0-windows-x64-setup.exe. - macOS 12 or newer, Apple Silicon and Intel: use
actionlay-1.3.0-macos-universal.dmg, then drag ActionLay to Applications. - Linux x64: follow the signed APT/DNF repository instructions, using the stable channel. Ubuntu 22.04+, Mint 21+, Debian 12+ and Fedora-compatible systems with glibc 2.35+ are supported. A graphics backend compatible with wgpu is required.
Portable Windows ZIP and Linux tar.gz builds, native DEB/RPM packages, dependency sources, the browser bundle and SHA256SUMS are also attached. The telemetry CLI is included; on macOS it is inside ActionLay.app/Contents/MacOS/.
Builds are not signed by an identified publisher or Apple-notarized. macOS may require allowing ActionLay in System Settings → Privacy & Security; Windows may show an unknown-publisher prompt.
Known limits
- Browser: playback and export depend on the codecs supported by the browser. Telemetry currently comes from embedded GoPro GPMF; linked GPX/FIT activities, other camera telemetry and joined chapter timelines are not connected. The editor previews demonstration telemetry. Export supports H.264/H.265 MP4 and source AAC audio when available; ProRes, transparent output and PNG sequences remain desktop features. Without direct file saving, exports are buffered in memory and limited to 256 MB. Map providers must support browser CORS. Browser storage quotas can limit retained layouts.
- Desktop export: processes one file with embedded GoPro telemetry using eight-bit SDR decoding. Linked GPX/FIT activities, native-camera telemetry and joined chapter timelines are not yet included in export; HDR/ten-bit preservation is not implemented.
- Privacy zones hide map positions and route segments; they do not redact the video or other GPS widgets.
- Insta360 playback shows raw video, without 360 stitching or reframing. Telemetry availability varies by camera and firmware.

ActionLay 1.2.0
ActionLay 1.2.0 adds immersive full-screen playback, remembered window geometry, export quality presets and clearer telemetry loading progress. It also improves recovery from buffering and slow video output, and refreshes the Windows installer and macOS installation window.
What’s new
Playback and window behaviour
-
About ActionLay now has a coordinated gecko design, the shared slogan, licence/project links and the application version (development builds include the short Git commit): in the native ActionLay menu on macOS, and in the ActionLay menu on Windows and Linux.
-
Full-screen playback with a dedicated transport overlay. Controls and the mouse pointer hide after 3 seconds without movement and reappear when you move the mouse. Use F11 or the full-screen button to toggle it, and Escape to exit. Full-screen is available during playback, outside the layout editor.
-
The app remembers window position, size and maximized state. A first launch opens a centered window smaller than the usable screen area; restored geometry is kept within available displays.
-
Software video decoding can be selected under Settings → Advanced, alongside the playback diagnostics setting. This is a decoder preference; it does not replace the graphics backend used to display the interface.
Export quality and preparation
- Balanced, High quality and Fast export presets, with remembered export settings. Balanced uses software encoding and preserves the supported source codec, MP4/MOV container, resolution and video bitrate when available. This still re-encodes the video to add the overlay; it is not lossless packet copying.
- An Advanced section controls codec, container, resolution, quality or bitrate, maximum bitrate, buffer size, keyframe interval and encoder preference/speed. Edited options are highlighted and can individually return to the selected preset’s defaults.
- Selecting a preset resets its encoding options while keeping the output mode and background. Previously edited settings reopen Advanced on the next export. CLI export supports the same presets.
- Export now explicitly shows metadata loading and preparation before frame rendering, with a separate progress bar. Complete-route requirements are satisfied before the first frame is exported.
Maps and telemetry
- Map widgets show a spinner while loading the telemetry needed for the entire route, fitted zoom or the completed route after a seek. A percentage is shown when the metadata index provides a packet count. These indicators are interface elements and never appear in exported video.
- Metadata progress uses the existing index, without extra reads of video or audio payloads.
- Full-route backfill explicitly signals validated completion, allowing fitted zoom to activate without waiting for playback to reach the end of the video. Included maps fit and center the complete route to 80% of the viewport; older saved layouts retain their own zoom settings.
Fixes and reliability
- Improved audio-clock stability across latency jitter and buffering, keeping the displayed playback position monotonic between seeks.
- Playback waits for decoded audio and video to recover, rather than relying only on compressed packets being buffered. This reduces starvation and growing A/V drift after slow reads.
- Overdue video frames are drained across bounded presentation queues. Decoding preserves reference frames while skipping unnecessary downloads/conversions of output that is already late; seek preroll and the final frame at EOF are retained.
- Output recovery now accounts for the measured recent cost of frame materialization. Slow conversion no longer repeatedly sends the player back into buffering merely because a frame was usable before conversion but late when it finished.
- Recovery regressions now count actual post-seek buffering transitions, rather than using decoded timestamps that could hide presentation stalls. macOS Intel testing exercised real audio at both 44.1 and 48 kHz; the release pipeline also passed on macOS ARM, Windows and Linux before tagging.
- Reviewed all 34 language catalogues in context: repaired joined or shifted labels, chapter counts, the action to keep only one file open, GPS states, slope and typography terminology, and incomplete error messages. Catalogue checks now protect placeholders, technical identifiers and single-line labels from translation regressions.
- Already buffered packets now replenish decoded audio before costly video-frame conversion, reducing audio starvation during recovery. The slow-output regression keeps its real audio clock and strict recovery assertions; both macOS architectures pass.
Installation and distribution
-
Download filenames now include 1.2.0, including the Windows installer, universal macOS DMG and portable archives. Installed application names remain stable for upgrades and file associations.
-
Windows installer: welcome/completion artwork and the header icon now use the ActionLay gecko and coordinated teal palette. Per-user/all-users installation, upgrades, uninstall, the Start Menu entry and optional desktop shortcut remain supported.
-
macOS DMG: the installation window now displays the branded background, drag direction and shared slogan: Your videos. Your telemetry. No strings attached. The window leaves room for Finder’s bars so the instructions remain visible. The portable background alias and icon positions are verified after the final DMG is compressed and remounted.
-
Signed Linux repositories are now deployed within the main release pipeline, after release publication. A repository deployment failure is reported in the same CI run. Pages actions have been updated to Node 24.
-
A coordinated GitHub social preview and editable vector sources are included in the repository.

ActionLay 1.1.0
ActionLay 1.1.0 adds a multilingual interface, regional preferences, complete-route map framing and adjustable buffering. It also keeps telemetry visible through slow network reads and makes export preparation more reliable.
What’s new
Interface and regional preferences
- 34 interface languages, with native language names and a searchable selector under Settings → Interface. System default is the first option and the initial selection: it follows changes to the system language, with English as the fallback for unsupported languages. You can also choose a language explicitly, without restarting.
- The Show diagnostic data switch now lives in Interface settings.
- Settings → Regional settings controls metric or imperial measurement preferences independently of the interface language. Choose System default to follow the system’s regional measurement settings, or select a fixed preference.
- Layouts and widgets now offer Default for units. A widget inherits its layout’s units; a layout set to Default inherits the regional preference. Explicit widget and layout units take priority. Included layouts use Default.
Maps and telemetry
- Included layouts with a map now show the entire route: dark green for the completed section and yellow for the section ahead, with north up. The two additional-data loading warnings have been removed.
- Map widgets can use fixed zoom or fit the entire route, with configurable coverage. Included maps center the route and fit its bounds to 80% of the map viewport along the limiting dimension.
- Route fitting works independently of the route line mode: it loads the complete route even when only the completed section is drawn. Preview keeps fixed zoom until loading finishes.
- Slow storage reads and buffering preserve the last valid displayed telemetry. Short gaps in telemetry also retain the previous value for a configurable duration per widget, set to 3 seconds in included layouts; longer gaps show the widget’s fallback. Paused and buffering time does not consume that tolerance.
Playback and export
- Settings → Advanced exposes read-ahead duration, the buffer required before playback resumes, and the memory limit for compressed packets. Defaults remain 3 seconds, 2 seconds and 32 MiB. Changes apply to the open video and are saved; a button restores the defaults. Read-ahead starts when a video opens, even while paused. Packet and decoded-frame limits can also constrain the amount buffered; the memory setting is not a cap on the app’s total memory use.
- Export defaults to Video with overlay.
- When export needs a route line or complete-route zoom, it loads and validates the complete route before rendering the first frame. An incomplete metadata read stops export rather than producing a partial route. Cancellation during this preparation is handled as cancellation.
- Export progress shows elapsed and estimated remaining time in seconds, minutes and seconds, or hours, minutes and seconds, as appropriate. The remaining-time estimate excludes the initial metadata-loading phase.
- An export keeps the measurement units selected when it starts, even if regional preferences change while it is running.
Download and install
- Windows 10/11 x64: use
actionlay-windows-x64-setup.exe. The installer supports per-user or all-users installation, upgrades and uninstall through Windows Apps. It always creates a Start Menu entry; the desktop shortcut is optional. - macOS 12 or newer, Apple Silicon and Intel: use
actionlay-macos-universal.dmg, then drag ActionLay to Applications. - Linux x64: follow the signed APT/DNF repository instructions, using the stable channel. Ubuntu 22.04+, Mint 21+, Debian 12+ and Fedora-compatible systems with glibc 2.35+ are supported. A graphics backend compatible with wgpu is required.
