BLACK 2006 Recomp v0.1.0-alpha.2 — Build entirely on Linux

@portingpete portingpete released this 14 Oct 20:43

BLACK can now be generated and built entirely on x86_64 Linux, without a Windows installation. Build BLACK.sh uses native Linux Python, LLVM, Rust and Mono; pinned xwin downloads Microsoft SDK/CRT headers and libraries directly. The resulting Windows x64 game runs through Wine/Proton.

  • Build BLACK.sh: complete Linux build from your supported original Xbox files.
  • Play BLACK.sh: one-click play with saved preferences.
  • BLACK Settings.sh: separate graphics, controls, language and save/profile settings.
  • Install Linux Shortcuts.sh: clickable desktop entries.
  • Both compiled host launchers, Windows build support, host source, licenses and SHA-256 checksums.

Download the .tar.gz for Linux or .zip for Windows and extract the complete folder. Supply your supported original Xbox disc files in game/. On Linux, install the prerequisites in Linux build and setup, then run bash './Build BLACK.sh'. Generation and compilation do not use Wine. Wine/Proton, an AVX2 CPU, .NET support and graphics drivers are needed to play. Install native d3dcompiler_47 into the same Wine prefix as described in the guide; it is not bundled.

The public starter excludes game executables, retail assets, generated game code, language-bank binaries and saves. These are generated locally from your own files. The included host launchers were compiled on Linux and are the exact bytes tested on Windows and Wine.

Validation passed for complete Linux generation and game/launcher compilation from both a source checkout and an extracted starter with no Git metadata, the production runtime and Rust DSP JIT ABI check under Wine, 45 Windows launcher checks, Linux wrapper/desktop/package regressions, and all seven GitHub CI checks on the final source revision.

Wine 9.0 with Wine Mono 9.0.0 and native d3dcompiler_47 downloaded on Linux played the opening movies, reached the BLACK title and first-mission gameplay, and opened the separate settings window. First-mission input changed the camera and position, fired the pistol, and reloaded it. The fresh executable from the final extracted starter also reached the mission and responded to movement. The Kelvin Direct3D 11 backend was active under WSLg. Tests used external timeouts; any surviving game child was stopped explicitly afterward.

This is an alpha. WSLg exposes software graphics, so hardware GPU performance, full mission stability, real Proton gameplay and Steam Deck remain unverified. Audio was not assessed. Back up save/, game/UDATA/ and game/TDATA/ before moving an installation with progress.

Built on XboxRecomp and community Xbox hardware components. Original host code is MIT; third-party notices and licenses are included. Development included assistance from Claude Code and OpenAI Codex. This is an unofficial community project.

BLACK 2006 Recomp v0.1.0-alpha.1 — Portable launchers and Linux

First experimental starter release of BLACK 2006 Recomp.

  • BLACK PC Launcher.exe: one-click play with saved preferences.
  • BLACK PC Settings.exe: separate graphics, controls, language and save/profile settings.
  • Build BLACK.cmd: one-time Windows build from your own Xbox files.
  • Play BLACK.sh and BLACK Settings.sh: Linux entry points through Wine/Proton, with a shared dedicated prefix.
  • Install Linux Shortcuts.sh: creates clickable Linux desktop launchers.
  • Portable executable layout, host source, licenses and SHA-256 checksums.

Download the .zip for Windows or .tar.gz for Linux, and extract the entire folder. Supply your supported original Xbox disc files in game/. The public starter does not include the game executable, retail assets, generated game code, language banks or saves. Build once on Windows with Visual Studio 2022, CMake, Git, Python and Rust as described in README.md; the resulting folder runs on Windows or can be copied to Linux.

Linux needs x86_64/AVX2, Wine/Proton and Wine Mono or .NET 4 support. For Wine, install native d3dcompiler_47 into the same prefix; Wine's builtin shader compiler otherwise falls back to CPU rendering. See Linux setup for exact prefix and DXVK/Proton instructions.

Validated: Windows direct/portable launch behavior, archive checksums and permissions, Linux path/prefix and desktop-entry parsing, isolated Wine first-mission gameplay and the live settings window. Wine 9.0 + Wine Mono 9.0.0 + native d3dcompiler_47 enabled the Kelvin GPU backend under WSLg. This environment exposes software graphics; hardware GPU performance, full Linux playthroughs, Steam Deck and real Proton gameplay remain unverified.

This is an alpha. Complete later-mission playthroughs remain unverified. Back up save/, game/UDATA/ and game/TDATA/ before moving an installation with progress.
