Better Find Full Text v1.2.1

Fixed

  • Auto-merge no longer loses authors. When a Connector-saved duplicate was
merged into a pre-existing item, only the attachments moved across — the
duplicate's field metadata was discarded. If the canonical item lacked authors
and the duplicate had them, the authors were lost. The merge now backfills the
canonical from the richer duplicate: missing creators (authors/editors) and any
blank scalar fields are filled in before the duplicate is erased. Fill-only —
data already on the canonical is never overwritten.

Fetch batch reliability and UX overhaul.

  • Per-item timeout watchdog — a hung snapshot/import no longer stalls the whole batch (the "does nothing after ~10 items / can't run again" failure). Each item runs under a hard ceiling; on timeout it is counted as failed and the loop continues. Tunable in the new settings pane (default 60 s).
  • Live, accurate progress — a single fixed-height status line (constant window size regardless of batch size) plus a headline tally that sums correctly (PDF / snapshot / paywalled / skipped / failed), so you see full text actually being found, not just a counter.
  • Better-behaved progress window — no longer floats above the browser/other apps, stays fully on-screen, and a stray click no longer makes it vanish mid-batch (it auto-dismisses at the end; the Cancel menu stops a run).
  • Settings pane (Zotero → Settings → Better Find Full Text) exposing the per-item timeout.

PMID/PMCID fallback via PMC + EuropePMC

New strategy for items that lack a DOI/URL but carry a PMID: (or PMCID:, or DOI:) in the Extra field — and for items whose only identifier is a PubMed URL.

After the built-in finder fails, the plugin now tries, in order:

  1. PMC OA PDF endpoint when a PMCID is known (guaranteed-OA full text).
  2. EuropePMC search by PMID — covers PMC content, additional OA sources, and preprints (bioRxiv / medRxiv / arXiv via SRC:PPR). Filters fullTextUrlList to OA / Free / Restricted-free availability codes; skips subscription-only links. Backfills the DOI onto the item state.
  3. NCBI ID converter as last-resort DOI/PMCID backfill for very recent PMIDs not yet in EuropePMC's index.

Any DOI learned along the way feeds the existing journal-article flow, so arXiv / bioRxiv DOIs resolve through citation_pdf_url without a second hop. The manual PubMed -> PMC -> arXiv chain collapses to a single click.

v1.0.1

Spells out the login step in the paywall-handling notification.

When the plugin opens items in your browser for the Connector workflow, the in-Zotero notification now reads:

N paywalled items opened in browser.
If needed, complete your institutional or publisher login, then click the Zotero Connector to save the PDF. Duplicates will be auto-merged into your existing items.

This is a clearer nudge for readers who land on an institutional-proxy or publisher sign-in page and aren't sure whether to click the Connector before or after logging in.

v1.0.0

@ppavlidis ppavlidis released this 20 Apr 17:55

First release of Better Find Full Text, a Zotero 7/8/9 plugin that goes beyond the built-in "Find Available PDF" to attach full-text PDFs and snapshots to your library items.

Install

Download better-find-full-text.xpi below, then in Zotero: Tools → Add-ons → gear icon → Install Add-on From File.

What it does

  • Wraps Zotero's built-in finder, then falls through targeted strategies (direct citation_pdf_url check, paywall detection, snapshot fallback, patent handling).
  • Routes paywalled items to your browser via the canonical DOI URL, so your own cookies drive the redirect chain. When the Zotero Connector creates a duplicate record, the plugin auto-merges the new attachments onto your existing item.
  • Detects abstract-only URLs, JS-rendered SPA shells, and Cloudflare bot-challenge pages before or after the snapshot pass — so the plugin doesn't save useless HTML.
  • Force retry menu entry cleans up obviously-bad snapshots and bypasses the "already has PDF" skip, for items where an existing attachment isn't the main article.
  • Cancel menu entry interrupts a running batch between items.

See the README for full details and known limitations.

Requirements

  • Zotero 7.0, 8.x, or 9.x
  • Zotero Connector browser extension (for the paywall workflow)
